Any advice on playing the MKV files?? I can't seem to get it to work in media player or media player classic. Thanks.
A short answer is to install Haali's Media Splitter to play back MKV/MKA (matroska video/audio) files. (This splitter also plays VC-1 video, e.g. blu-ray.) Here is the official matroska site (which also links to the Haali Media Splitter): http://www.matroska.org/ Look at the "Filters" section of "Downloads". If you run Windows, DirectX filters perform faster for playback.
Here's Haali's site: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
The popular complete codec pack, K-Lite, (in its various versions) is found here: http://free-codecs.com/ .. K-Lite supports MKV playback, and also gives you an option to show video-preview thumbnails for them when browsing your files. My brother doesn't like codec packs, but K-Lite (Mega pack) is easy, powerful, and I've never had any codec conflicts from it. Official K-Lite site is here: http://www.codecguide.com/
Here's a simple tool to losslessly cut/join MKV files, and also to make MKVs from other files, or extract streams from existing MKVs: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/
I know AVI etc would be more familiar, but MKV is a great container format with a future (because designed from the bottom-upwards to be extensible) to edit together many streams and also many kinds of streams (not even just video/audio streams).

these mkv's only playing a few seconds for me then freezing.... have 40+ full movies in the same resolution (and mkv) that play fine so thinking it must be some strange codec problem, tried it in mpc, vlc, and gomplayer with same results - plays a few seconds then freezes.

I made some lossless cuts from my source video, keeping the source format Mpg2-TS: brown top.ts180MB, 2:06 mins http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DNU7W2QRSince it's Mpg-TS, it might be the original format in which the tv program was digitally broadcasted, I mean not recoded during capture. This should play back more easily than my last 2 clips, but it will still be taxing on the hardware. If someone wants to try compressing it and reposting it, go ahead. If your results are good, please tell me how you encoded it..As far as the playback problems people have had, I believe its mostly going to be due to using heavy compression options with the x264 codec and with HD-sized video - not to do with MKV, as you mentioned. I read forum posts elsewhere on the 'net where people also complained of slow playback for x264 Hd videos, but maybe I used settings that weren't so good, who knows. I used actually a "default" profile the last time and used less encoding features than in my "test" video I posted back a couple of pages in this thread (for which no one complained of playback) -- so I'm disappointed it didn't work out and not realy sure why. That prior "test" video (which was with a higher profile and more encoding features/options) was reported to play back with no problems on my brother's computer. On my own computer, my last 2 posted videos never freeze in Windows Media Player. There's probably a better way to encode to target more machines out there, than the way I did it.

"Roasting Show" it will play again Feb. 7 at 1:30.
We've seen the green/white top over and over, but we can't get video of this?
It would certainly be appreciated...
I second that.
