The number of people who's jobs is "just" coding is tiny in my experience. Most professional programming is tweaking or customizing already existing code and tech support/bug fixing type stuff. I've had two jobs that were "officially" programming and in both of them I spent most of my time talking with clients/end users just figuring out what they were actually doing and what they wanted to have happen. The next most time consuming part of the job was just using the program myself without actually looking at the source code, trying to duplicate what the end users were doing and getting.

Either way. I couldn't have a career that revolves around it. Besides, programming jobs here don't pay very well.

I actually seem to have an affinity for it. I seem to be able to understand what the users are trying to say and communicate well with them, so I can find out what they feel the problem actually is. (Rule of thumb: Never trust the initial bug report to be accurate.) And then I can "zone in" to the code and find problems that makes even the people who wrote it go "Huh! You're right, that is wrong."
