is sex a drug?
Endorphins are released during sex and they have similar chemical properties as Heroin. So, yes.
the neurotransmitter targeted by lsd is serotonin - which explains why selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sometimes cause complete psychotic breaks resulting in suicidal rampages....
Ok, now type that in english so I can understand it.
Okay. Serotonin regulates your mood. So, lets use an analogy. Say Serotonin was represented by a traffic light. LSD comes along and turns all the lights green causing a bad accident. In other words, without something to regulate your mood, chaos is imminent.
in a sense, yes... though an overload can cause visual, auditory and other sensory chaos as well.
just HOW serotonin actually works is still not understood - this is why there are now black-box warnings on all ssri's like prozac, etc...
It needs to be kept balanced is the best way to look at it. A shortage or surplus creates unpredictable and unwanted results.
and therein lies the puzzle. no one actually knows what a proper balance actually is...
sorta like why do some people - taking the exact same amount of lsd - have such widely varying experiences; from a mild and pleasant high, to diving from the 15th floor of a building thinking one can fly...
this is why the black-box warnings - the amount of reuptake to inhibit and it's actual impact is still a big unknown.
it's been narrowed down somewhat, but no one actually knows why it seems to work in some people.
if you read through the literature, it's shot through with phrases like "thought to" "believed that" "appears to be" and other such equivocal phrases.

The brain in all of it's chemical glory is one tough mystery to solve. The complexity of it is mind-boggling. Subtle variations in brain chemistry can make all the difference in the world and trying to pinpoint how chemicals react in so many different configurations is no easy task.
just so. i used to laff out loud when this one antidepressant commercial (can't remember which) came on. it'd go through a list of symptoms for depression, then - right in the middle of the commercial - it said, "while the cause is unknown, it's believed to be caused by..."
without even understanding the true biochemical cause, they've come up with a drug that "appears" to help.
this is how very little we still know about brain chemistry. and this is just ONE area of biochemistry.
boggles the mind is right...
