"Stone Cold" Steve Austin is following in the footsteps of Ultimate Warror and Chyna as he has legally changed his real name to his wrestling name. "Stone Cold" has legally changed his name from Steve Williams to Steve Austin.

Is there a source you'd like to quote, or are we just supposed to believe you? C'mon, bro. You gotta cite sources.

I'm not sure how credible Wrestlininc.com is, but whatever.

As far as Austin changing his name, it's probably a good idea. WWE owns the "Stone Cold" name, so if/when Steve does work outside of WWE, he won't have to be marketed as Steve Williams.

They don't cite a source on their website, either. Show me an article from the Torch, or the Insider, then I'll buy it.

I'm not trying to hate. I'm just saying that wrestlinginc isn't the gold standard of wrestling journalism.

JDawg's Opinion

I've been a fan of professional wrestling since I was a little kid. I've been to dozens of house shows, a few Smackdown tapings, RAW, and the 1992 Royal Rumble which was held in my hometown of Albany, New York. I've also been to an original ECW house show, and traveled to NYC on Christmas eve of 1999 to attend a taping of ECW on TNN. I've been to open-air WWF shows at a local baseball field. And yes, I have been to Orlando to watch a pair of Impact tapings.

So, it's safe to say that I've been around.

As of late, there has been a lot of talk of a ratings war between TNA and WWE...most of this talk is coming, dubiously, from TNA themselves...and as a life-long wrestling fan, I think I am more than qualified to have an educated opinion on whether or not this will happen.

The only question is: Is TNA ready?

The answer is: No. Not even close.

The reasons: Vince Russo books their shows. The truth is, Russo gets too much credit for WWE's success in the 90s. While it is true that there was a creative explosion in WWE before and during the Attitude Era, little of it had to do with the writers. Vince Russo didn't bring in Mike Tyson; Vince McMahon did. Vince Russo didn't create DX; Shawn Michaels and Triple H did, as the idea was theirs, and 90% of the stuff they did on TV was adlib, and a lot of it was actually contrary to what they were SUPPOSED to do on camera.

Believing his own hype, Russo books with no fear. He fully believes that it was he who created WWF Attitude, and he alone. In truth, Russo's wild ideas had a censor in WWE--Vince McMahon. With no censor, we have things like a two-hour Christmas edition of Impact in which every match is a gimmick match. Vince Russo holds TNA back creatively. And so does the next man I want to mention...

Jeff Jarrett. He is a wrestler who leveraged himself into a position of ownership thanks to the fact that his father was a mildly-famous booker/promoter. If not for his Daddy's money and influence, Jeff Jarrett never would have founded TNA.

Not that there's anything wrong with getting help. But Jeff does not have a mind for the business. Here is a guy who spent most of the Wars bouncing back and forth between WWE and WCW, and complaining about how the veterans won't get out of the way of the young guys. And yet for the first three years of TNA's history, the main event picture featured hardly anyone under the age of 40. He has made hires like Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall. Jeff has forgotten what it was like to be a young wrestler in a promotion where the veterans held him down with their political pull.

Dixie Carter. She was an ad executive who only has the job as the top executive in TNA because her father is the CEO of Panda Energy, the company that owns TNA. She has no experience in the business, and it has shown, mostly in the fact that she hires every WWE cast-off that hits the market. Impact has the largest roster for any single wrestling show on TV today. Yes, Impact's roster is larger than RAW's, or Smackdown's, or ECW's, or NOAH's show on the Fight Network.

You want proof how little she understands this business? Her goal is to put Impact on Monday nights, head-to-head with RAW. And that, while nice for us, is retarded for her. WWE has just as much young talent as TNA does, plus actual stars that THEY built. Their marketing machine is tenfold what TNA's is (or ever will be), and they have a proven track record. If Dixie was smart, she'd know that this isn't 1997 anymore, and in today's wrestling industry, the real money is in PPV buys, not TV ratings. Because of that, she should be concerned with making the product as good as it can be, rather than trying to bang heads with WWE. She should try to establish Thursday Nights as TNA night, and thus make it a destination for ALL wrestling fans, not just the ones she might manage to snag from RAW.

Bottom Line: Impact is a clusterfunk. When they expanded to two hours, TNA finally had the elbow room to showcase their talent without having to rush them through every segment. So what was the first thing they did? They hired four more wrestlers, and went after Jericho, Lesnar, and RVD. So rather than being satisfied with the roster they had, and showcasing these men, they saw the extra hour as an excuse to fill more roster spots. The result? Well, on the first edition of the two-hour Impact featured a run-in in EVERY SEGMENT. Literally. The opening segment featured Sting running in, then Sting being interrupted by a video from Kurt Angle that lasted into the next segment, following the commercial. There was an interview segment in which an interviewer ran-in on another interviewer. It was ridiculous, and not in a good way.

TNA has negative net worth. Not only that, but they have yet to finish a year with a profit.

A ratings war? Ha. TNA won't last long enough for that to happen. All it will take is a change in the management at Panda Energy, and that new CEO will look at their earnings statement, see nothing but losses, and cut ties with the promotion. Then Vince McMahon will buy TNA, and the war will be over before it even starts.

They just aren't ready. The show is clustered and jumbled, and there is no time for a solid promo, or a solid one-on-one match. They've spent so much money on these wrestlers that they HAVE to feature them on the show, and that has watered-down the product. TNA has a niche audience, somewhere around 1.1 in the ratings. Sometimes they get as high as 1.5, and sometimes they hit the 0.9 again, but there is no REAL movement in the ratings. THere is no growth. So no, TNA is not ready for a war.
