It seems the recent news GTA IV being delayed has naturally come as a disappointment to many fans of the series. As a change of pace, it may be nice to fondly reminisce over what is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable series in video gaming.
It's really hard to pinpoint which one is the most enjoyable. The originals were of course fantastic, then III was probably the most awe inspiring. Having been a fan of the original games that preceded it, getting thrust into this expansive new world on the PS2 was a special new thing and experience indeed
For me however, I'll go with Vice City as being the pinnacle of the series. The fake Miami's lush sunsets, and bright evening lights made it a joy to stroll around and explore (and engage in the frequent bit of criminal activity of course ) as Tommy Vecetti.
The cartoon like, light hearted nature of the series is what makes it for me not conflicting to play. Films that have inspired it such as Scarface and Goodfellas all come in toe with a strong 'being a mobster isn't good' type message, with main characters regularly getting their comeuppance. GTA however provides such a silly (in a good way) make believe context, that is so aware it's a video game simply intended for fun, that I've never had a problem playing it. We're never invited to take it seriously, and we don't, but we are invited to enjoy it, and that we most certainly do

My fave was GTA3 as well. Vice City was great, but I preferred the grittiness of 3, and San Andreas was just too big for it's own good. Not to mention is was crammed full of far too many half realized, and occasionally boring ideas.
GTA Vice City for sure. It had style, Radio stations were great, I liked how you could take over businesses and get money from them. GTA: SA was great Didn't like the hole CJ Character and how it played out. Just hope GTA IV is released in February and not March, April or May.
If any got a 360 and needs a quick GTA fix play Saints Row. The best GTA Clone on the Market. It's a good game.
III was great and i got it by mistake cause when i brought my PS2 Currys was supposed to give me Getaway, but i would have to say Vice City is my fav. i just could not get passed one of the boat missions, so that game was left unfinnished.
Vice City for me too. I loved everything about it and ended up completing it on both the PS2 + PC (I heavily modified the PC version though......even had a Delorean in it ). The soundtrack was easily the best that I've came across in any game too. I liked San Andreas a lot too but I think I spent too much time on the girlfriends in it (yes i got them all ) . If SA hadn't have lost the plot with the countryside parts then it probably would have been my favourite....especially with the early parts of the game and the gang wars in Los Santos ( and 2pac, NWA etc on the soundtrack) .
The main things that I hated about the Liberty City games ( GTA III + GTA:LC Stories ) were the poor soundtracks and the lack of air vehicles . GTA IV has helicopters any way, so hopefully they've got some decent tunes in there too
