There are things running on this site that make coming here not as fun anymore. Some I can see on screen and others I can't in the background.

Two solutions, depending on browser:

IE: Use a <Hosts> file. Info HERE on downloading and installing it.

Firefox: (Recommended) Install Adblock Plus extension, and NoScript extension.

Either of these solutions will make your browsing to ALL sites much safer.

Same here, I'm having a lot of problems with ads here lately, starting to get really annoying. I ran a couple of spyware scanners on my machine too just in case. If I click on a thread, often the page will refresh with a full page advert and I have no idea how to get back to the thread so I just give up. One was for an online poker game and I can't remember the other. Also I get a windows style popup saying that there have been "errors detected on my computer" and when I click OK it takes me to yet another advert. Starting to annoy me

You need to install the proper extensions and filters. Firefox alone won't do much. I use the Ad-Block Plus, and the G. Filterset extensions and I have never got a virus warning or even seen an Ad since they've been in place here.

I've used IE recently to log on and my Spysweeper popped up with 2 warnings.
Using firefox with adblock extension I never got those warnings. Here's a thread to setup ad blocking:

Exactly what Xenaguy said. Use Firefox and the Adblock add-on. It's stopped many problems I've had with this site in the past.

There is also the option of switching to lesser known browsers such as Safari or Opera. Less baddies are made for those. Don't get an IE based browser as you'll be just as vulnerable as IE is itself. Plus, there's a quick preferences option that allows you to disable java and javascript on the fly in Opera. Good stuff.

All in all, for SP, I definitely recommend what the others are saying. FireFox+Adblock=Surfing Goodness

I've never once gotten a virus here...ever, nor a warning. I never see popups, either. Got McAfee, and Netzero DSL stops all that stuff, too.

If you want to troubleshoot errors...here's a guide I used in the past, which helped me fix those. I also defraged my computer, which worked wonders. I recommend defraging every few months.

There's also the newest version of Netscape (9.0 beta) which is now a cousin of Firefox (a number of FF extensions will even work with the browser). It also doesn't suffer from some of the same issues as FF 2.0.0.4 does.

I think the Partypoker Popup comes from Imagevenue.
I'm using Firefox. Since yesterday I have Adblock plus instead of Adblock + FiltersetG and I haven't seen any Partypoker since then.

Another vote for the WinHelp2002 hosts file. Since I've modified my hosts file per their instructions, no viruses from here, and most other sites don't show so many ads either.

i don't know why everyone thinks firefox is the solution. but it's not. no matter what browser i've used, ie, firefox, etc, i still get this virus warning when i visit this site. and just now everything froze. after a while i got a message with that whole dr watson postmortem debugger. i've check my pc for viruses and everything is cleared. so there's obviously something on this site that's causing this site to be horriblenot just for me but for others. someone needs to check to see whats going on and fast. this has been happening to me for several days now. i don't get any problems with any other sites or forums i visit, just this one.

I would of thought Firefox with No Script plus Adblock would have got rid of the ad junk.
Not sure about the virus warning - I run AVG and its picked up nothing. Also I run Spyware Blaster in the background which also stops spyware crap.
Have you run Hijack This! to see if something hasn't been installed on your computer?

nothing malicious is installed on my pc. i've already checked with everything. nothing found. it's something that's on this forum. i also know that imagevenue has been having this problem too. the thing is i haven't even viewed any pics on this site and i still get messed with. i don't have any probs on any other site but this one. i get the virus warning, sometimes i don't, but it always freezes up and sometimes i get a message saying an attack was prevented on my pc. the thing is once i get out of the site and come back again nothing happens anymore. until that is i come back again the next day. this always happens.

demonoid, i have been at this forum for 3 and a half years, and this site has never, not once done anything malicious to my machine. i really think you should run another through check on your machine. check cookies, temp files, even your registry. there has to be something triggering the scans.

It's being discussed, however imagevenue is probably the main imagehost used here (at celebutopia it isn't) and most people download the images with a mass downloading program such as gallery grabber. I personally don't want to see it go, but as it is becoming a problem it's something that we are having to look into

Okay, but in today's computer age, no matter which browser you run, it's not enough. You need (with IE) to run a 'hosts' file, updated regularly. With Firefox, you need to run 'Adblock+' and 'NoScripts' extensions. I haven't yet seen you say that you're doing that.

I read an article in the tech section of the Tampa Tribune last week, said that the latest hackers' trick is to hack the ad company's servers, and insert a small script into the ad pop-up scripts. These additional scripts send your browser (in hidden mode) to a website to download a piece of malware (trojan, virus, spyware or adware). Apparently this is happening to your computer when logging into this site.

The article went on to say that the onus is on the ad companies to secure their servers from this type of hack. I strongly disagree. I believe it is the responsibility of each user to secure his own machine. To prevent this type of attack, you MUST either run IE (or Opera) with a 'hosts' file, or firefox with blocking extensions. To do otherwise is to invite the hackers in to your machine.

Additionally with adblock or adblock+ get the Filterset G Updater extension so that it actually blocks some ads... Naturally you can write your own filters, but Filterset G seems to work pretty well, and saves a bunch of work.

Another source of host file entries is Spybot Search & Destroy. If you're using Spybot switch to Advanced Mode and then under Tools go to Hosts file and then click the Add Spybot S&D hosts List button - I don't know how that compares to the other hosts file mentioned above, but some people may find this easier to do...

That's excellent! I've been using Spybot Search & Destroy for several years now, and didn't realize it had a "hosts" file option!

As for Filterset G extension, here's what adblock Plus.org says about it in their FAQ:
Do I need to install Filterset.G Updater?

I don't know about that stuff, I just read and report it. I'm using one of the listed filter sets (EasyList USA), and have no problems.

Also, in Spybot | Tools go to the IE Tweaks page and check Lock Hosts file as read-only as protection against hijackers - it can't hurt

Folks keep saying "No Scripts," but I believe some are not understanding what this means. It means turn "JavaScript" OFF. When you get a warning for JS/virus, the JS typically stands for JavaScript. If you say you've turned JS off and those warnings still appear, then you either haven't effectively turned JS off or something is running from your temp int folder that shouldn't be.

Add these 3 extensions to Firefox and work out how to configure them and you will kill 95% of all ads on the net.

The other, of course, involves orcs.

I'm gonna say 99%+. I haven't seen a popup or ad of any kind since I installed AdBlock Plus and NoScript about a year ago.

Actually, "NoScripts" is an extension to Firefox that automatically turns off all JavaScripts for all webpages. You have to manually allow scripts for each domain you visit in order for Java to run on that website. However, "NoScripts" still blocks ex-ternal scripts (such as advertisements coming from a different domain), thus protecting your machine from infection by 'bad' ads.

A "hosts" file can provide the same protection when running IE.

You can easily turn off JAVA scripts and all active scripts in IE (my IE is 6.0 with SP2). Easy. No more trojan alerts!

I left my computer on the SuperiorPics today for about 10 minutes while I went to get a bite to eat. When I came back, a file called WinSpyware 2006 was installing itself on my computer. I'm highly pissed because my computer is now slower than slow. I've never had a problem with this site before.

Saying "turn off java scripts" is not a good solutions. The right solution is simply to ban ImageVenue because it's the source of the problem. That's what CelebUtopia did and it makes sense.

I contacted ImageVenue about it and they said, "We didn't realize that. We'll loook into it." Then they wrote back and said they had banned the advertisers, but of course they were lying. Nothing changed. Same malignant ads are still there.

There are plenty of other good free image hosting services out there. Why not just ban them like CelebUtopia did. It'd be doing the users here a service.

It doesn't matter to me because I use a mass downloader and I have the ad sites blocked anyway, but before I had them blocked, I got hit and infected (through my anti-virus software) by Virtumundo and Vundo trojans from ImageVenue...

Anyway, just my $0.02

Banning an image host is NOT a good solution. The solution is for all users to learn how to protect their own computers from infection.
Should every image host be banned, because at any moment they might start pushing virus-infected ads? Wouldn't that be silly? We are trying to help users deal with the ads that are present on not only this forum and its imagehosts, but EVERY website they visit. It's very simple to protect one'sself from outside infection from embedded ads.
If using Firefox, get the AdBlock Plus extension, and the NoScript extension. If using IE, go to www.someonewhocares.org/hosts, and follow the directions to install the hosts file on your machine.
What's so freaking tough about that? It not only eliminates all ads and problems from ads on this forum, but on every website you'll ever visit! It's so simple anyone can do it. If anyone has a problem doing this, please ask here, someone will take you through it step-by-step.

As a matter of fact, I am typing this from a machine that I don't normally use, in IE instead of in FireFox at home. When I originally logged in to SP this morning, I was surprised to see the start page full of ads, pop-ups, and those annoying little green underline pop-up thingies! UGH!

I immediately went to someonewhocares.org/hosts, copied the page to the clipboard, pasted it into a notepad window, and saved it as "hosts" (no .txt on the end) just like it says on the page, rebooted IE, and voila! ALL ads gone, just like that! Total time elapsed, about 3 minutes! You folks try it, you'll it!

I just got one with Avast from one of the ImageVenue hosts.

XenaGuy, as far as I know, of the major image hosting sites, ImageVenue is the only one that has consistently had viruses and trojans. There are tons of image hosts out there that don't have them, so banning the one that does isn't such a bad thing. I just think it hurts the site because some users will think it's this site and not the image hosts that are giving them the viruses.

The second post from FoxWatcher is what I'm talking about, "There are things running on this site that make coming here not as fun anymore."

Turning of JavaScript just isn't a viable option for me. I need it for other sites related to work (I work from home, and most of our servers at work require JavaScript). I have Avast anti-virus and it's generally pretty good, but I let it get out of date at one point and twice got viruses from ImageVenue when it happened.

With so many other non-virus infected options, why not just ban them? It doesn't make a huge difference to me one way or the other. As I said before, I do most of my image downloading with PageScavenger and I'm not going to get a virus through it.

I'm just more concerned that it leaves people with a bad impression of SP.

I have logged on twice in the last 2 days and immediately got infected with the Exploit.JS.BO.D virus. Fortunately Bitdefender blocked it. Very sad to see this.

I didn't suggest turning off JavaScript ... or, if I did, I didn't mean to. I meant to say that the NoScript extension for FireFox effectively blocks all scripts from running, but you can turn them on for specific sites or domains. Just right-click the NoScript icon at the bottom of the browser window for options.

I still think that banning an imagehost because of ad behavior that is present on this forum's frontpage won't do any good. Some people have said they've gotten virus warnings just from visiting the frontpage. We can't ban forums.superiorpics.com, can we?

If you read the previous entries in this thread, you will see that you can protect your browser from nasty-ware not only on this site, but from all sites by loading a "hosts" file from www.someonewhocares.org for Internet Explorer users, or by adding "AdBlock Plus" and "NoScript" extensions to Firefox.

IE7Pro for IE browser emulates most of the popular Firefox extensions into one consolidated add-on (and continues to be developed). I'm sorry to say that SP motivated me to find this popular IE add-on (200 different ads shot at me taking ever longer to complete their load times, random webpage redirections, and once a while malware detected) -- I've never had a single problem since.

My virus scan(AVG free) doesn't even trigger.
I can see the topics in the threads, but when I click/enter one I generally (90%) get a billion ads loading and then some microsoft flash "update" AND some nonsense with realplayer tries to load up..and sometimes Adobe Acrobat (the pdf reader) opens up then says the file (what file??)is corrupted and can't open.
all of this is happening at once and my computer freezes up. lately I just kill my connection with the net and wait for all of that to wash out.
any hints on what might be causing all that? cause I am kinda getting agravated with it.

And since I might have yall's ear (good ol Marc Antony): does anyone know a really good program (free please) that will clean out all the leftovers of a program that doesn't get nailed in the Windows Uninstall/remove programs thing? I want to do some changes on virus scan (wanna go to Avast) and spyware (got Spybot S&D) amongst other things. doesn't help when one's computer is 7 yrs old (in Jan) and hasn't had a real cleaning besides the occasional defrag/disk cleanup.

any ideas oh masters of the infoverse>
thanks in advance.

The owners of this site want to earn money. If you don't like their methods there are 2 possibilities:
1. Don't vist SP anymore.
2. Your browser needs some add-ons like Adblock Plus and No Script or something similar. That would help not only at SP.

Even if you wanted to 'give back' to this site in good faith, not one person still could recommend allowing your browser to be nuked by these 'ads', so I think his reaction is pretty sane. (Btw I think this 'ad' service is not about persuading anyone to buy anything, but other agenda instead.) I doubt the SP site owners consciously elected to attack random passersby, possibly punishing them for checking out their forum, so I think there's a confusion somewhere. It's interesting though..

Something is definitely going on with the forum. Recently I've noticed that when I go into a section, the hard drive will spin up briefly. Plus at the bottom of my browser a whole bunch of things will show. It's like it's trying to load something. But it can't. And more recently for the past week or so my anti-virus pops up about half the time I come here. Most of the time it tells me that an intrusion attempt has been blocked. But just a few minutes ago, the anti-virus popped up and at the same time my browser closed on its own. Anyway the message from my anti-virus said that a fake-scan exploit had been blocked. That was weird. It's especially unnerving since I'd like to think I've got adequate security.

edit - I've also noticed a lot more ads than usual. They're not pop-ups, just mindless ads.

My guess is that you have a trojan already in your system files. I've been using Firefox 2 (currently at 2.0.0.18) with the Adblock Plus add-on and have not seen an ads or pop ups at this forum ever since (almost a year and a half now since I made the switch from IE to FF).

If you use Firefox with that add-on extension, you should have no problems (atleast with this site). If you still are having problems, either it didn't install correctly or you have a trojan already that is triggering a function call to bypass the extension.

I use IE7. Also, I'm defintely not ignoring the possibility that something found its way onto my computer. Having said that though, it's only this forum that triggers the problem. And what concerns me is that it's now happening most of the time I come here. As I said, another thing I've noticed is many more ads on here. Methinks that they are imbedded with some nasties that are occasionally getting through. I mean I have Norton Internet Security, spyware blaster and spybot and I'm still getting junk on my computer.

I haven't seen an ad on this forum in over a year. Ever since imagevenue started not policing it's ads strictly and letting them get rogue I got Ad-Block Plus. Likely, here on SP they too aren't looking at the ads closely enough and some of the companies are taking advantage.

Sounds to me like you still have some malware on your PC. Try running :

Malwarebytes Anti Malware

It can get rid of a lot of stuff that the others can't.

I'll start off wiht what I have. I use Opera as my browser, I run AVG everymorning, regularly and specifically before posting this run Spybot and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Acording to the above programs I'm shopping no vires/ad/maleware.. Randomly when I'm on here I'm either sporadically redirected to an ad page, or my Adobe reader asks for permission to access the web. Only on this site, not regularly, but sporadic.. Just a heads up...

thanks for all of the constructive input/info. I have dl'd Malwarebytes and will run it. I think that I'll dump AVG and go with Avast, since the AVG never finds/gets rid of anything on my puter. and to end with I'll likely move to FireFox.
again thanks

Funny - I've come across this post a few times where if someone has problems wiht a virus or something, some smartie recommends the person buy a Mac. The truth is you just need a good anti-virus softwre. I use CYberdefender, and its' really great. I feel safe visitng cites cause I know Cyberdefender will let me know if there's something there that will be harmful to my computer.

I prefer Cyberdefender because of it's amazing ability to block out the virus' from even getting to me.
