A lot of us have put ourselves on the SP MAP in the other thread. I thought it would be interesting to learn about our world by asking members firsthand.

Just cut and paste this into your own post, and answer the questions (edited to use Cam's better format ). Keep in mind that people from other countries are reading it, so you may need to explain some terms:

1) What city/town, province/state/territory, and country do you live in?
Answer:

2) What is the population of your city/town?
Answer:

3) If it's not a world-recognized city, what is the nearest big city to you and how far away?
Answer:

4) Is it industrial, agricultural, on the water, etc.?
Answer:

5) Tell us an interesting trivia fact about the city/town -
Answer:
6) Do you have a local food or drink that is peculiar to your area?
Answer:

7) If we were to go there on vacation, what's the one thing you'd want us to see or do?
Answer:

8) Any current male or female celebs born there?
Answer:

9) What's the favorite sports team for your city/town?
Answer:

You know, this might be a bit of a cheat, but I'm gonna use my hometown instead, because the place I currently live is very boring and would offer no interesting answers. (And because I'm growing more and more tired of living here and want to move back to my hometown.) Anyway...

1) What city/town, province/state/territory, and country do you live in?
Answer: Sunnyvale, CA; USA

2) What is the population of your city/town?
Answer: 131,760 (as of 2000)

3) If it's not a world-recognized city, what is the nearest big city to you and how far away?
Answer: I guess San Jose, which is literally right next door. Sunnyvale is also about 45 minutes south of San Francisco.

4) Is it industrial, agricultural, on the water, etc.?
Answer: A little bit industrial and agricultural. It also lies pretty close to the very bottom tip of the San Francisco Bay.

5) Tell us an interesting trivia fact about the city/town -
Answer: The Toys R Us a few blocks from our old home is supposedly haunted. The first ever Pong machine was installed in Sunnyvale. It's zip code and area code were used frequently in BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, which was set in Sunnydale. Yahoo! is also based there, not far from my grandparents' house. There was even an F2 tornado that touched down in 1998 and did some significant damage.

6) Do you have a local food or drink that is peculiar to your area?
Answer: I don't think so.

7) If we were to go there on vacation, what's the one thing you'd want us to see or do?
Answer: Perhaps the Moffett Federal Airfield and the NASA/Ames research center.

8) Any current male or female celebs born there?
Answer: Teri Hatcher was born and raised there. She lived just a few blocks from my elementary school (though she went to another one), but I did go to the same Junior High School as her, as well as the same college (in a neighboring city). She also went to Fremont High School (not where I went), where she was friends with my brother's 3rd grade teacher. Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano also grew up in Sunnyvale.

9) What's the favorite sports team for your city/town?
Answer: Sunnyvale doesn't have one, but when I was little, it was all about the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A's.

1) What city/town, province/state/territory, and country do you live in?
Answer: Portimão, Algarve, Portugal.

2) What is the population of your city/town?
Answer: 100 000

3) If it's not a world-recognized city, what is the nearest big city to you and how far away?
Answer: It may not be a world-recognized city, but Algarve is one of the top tourist places in the world. Nearest internacional city, the portuguese capital: Lisboa (Lisbon), 200 km distance.

4) Is it industrial, agricultural, on the water, etc.?
Answer:It's economic system is based in the tourists, so we live very musch of the third sector: services. (sun, beach, night, and babes, what can you ask more!?!?)

5) Tell us an interesting trivia fact about the city/town -
Answer:Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a former Portugal president was born in Portimão.

6) Do you have a local food or drink that is peculiar to your area?
Answer:A typical drink is "medronho", a very strong drink, that is produced in the mountains of Monchique, and that is very strong, very stong indeed... just like vodka, but better, because it's very rare. A typical food, we are very well known for our gastronomy: there is one "carne de porco à alentejana" that is very good, but I don't know how to explain.

7) If we were to go there on vacation, what's the one thing you'd want us to see or do?

Answer:Nope.

9) What's the favorite sports team for your city/town?
Answer: It's Portimonense, a soccer team that plays in portuguese second division. But as half of the portuguese population my favourite club is the soccer team Sport Lisboa e Benfica, one of the top fourteen clubs of soccer in the world to be considered by the FIFA as mythic, because have more than 14 million soccer fans. You must understand that in Portugal there isn't a culture of city clubs as in US, we are 10 million, and almost all of them are supporters of Benfica, Sporting or Porto (the three biggest soccer clubs of Portugal). Also, here, clubs like Benfica, Porto or Sporting, don't play only soccer, for instance, Benfica is one of the most time winner of portuguese basketball league, ring hockey, handball, vollyeball, etc...

1) What city/town, province/state/territory, and country do you live in?
Answer: Stockholm, Sweden.

2) What is the population of your city/town?
Answer: City of Stockholm - 788,269 (June 2007)
The Stockholm area - about 1,250,000

3) If it's not a world-recognized city, what is the nearest big city to you and how far away?
Answer: It´s the capitol of Sweden, so there´s nothing bigger around here, not in the whole of Scandinavia in fact.

4) Is it industrial, agricultural, on the water, etc.?
Answer: Industrial - meaning commerce, finance, services and high-tech. There are 7-10 (depending on definition) universities/university colleges in the area as well (my kind of industry).

5) Tell us an interesting trivia fact about the city/town -
Answer: Stockholm is more than often referred to as the "single people capitol". Different international reports usually count Stockholm as highest ranked when it comes to single households per capita in the whole of Europe (if not the world)

6) Do you have a local food or drink that is peculiar to your area?
Answer: Not really, but you will find the whole spectra of regional foods from all around the country here. One from where I grew up (far up north, near the arctic circle): Surstromming. "Sour herring". It´s not like pickled herring, the fish is fermented and canned for 1-2 years before served. Trust me, you need to open the can outdoors, and you should even have it in a bucket of water the very moment the opener breaks through the can. It stinks like *****! Then you rinse the fishes and put them on a plate. Now it only smells... different... and the herrings are ready to be eaten. Preferably with potatoes (boiled), chopped onions, some sour cream, and a special type of bread. Beer (milk´s not bad either) and snaps to go with that.

7) If we were to go there on vacation, what's the one thing you'd want us to see or do?
Answer: If weather´s good (we´re on the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, but due to the Gulf stream we have pretty decent climate) you should definitely go on as many boat trips as you have time for. Stockholm is basically made up of a series of islands of various sizes (only the main shopping district, I would say, is located on the mainland) and the archipelago stretching out halfway to Finland is very famous. But you should also take a trip inlands, on Sweden´s 3:rd biggest lake, Malaren. And you should find a place located somewhere up high to get a birds view. Really beautiful town, swarming with gorgeous ladies.

8) Any current male or female celebs born there?
Answer: Well, here are some that are famous on the international level:
Lena Olin (Alias, etc)
Lasse Hallstrom, director (Gilbert Grape, etc) and married to Lena.
Britt Ekland
Ingrid Bergman
Harriet Andersson (starred in many Ingmar Bergman movies)
Bibi Andersson (same as above)
Dolph Lundgren

9) What's the favorite sports team for your city/town?
Answer: The Stockholm teams are AIK, Djurgarden and Hammarby. Football is by far the most popular sport here but ice-hockey´s got a decent fan base as well (all our best players are in the NHL, so I guess our national league isn´t that exciting). As I wasn´t born here, I have other favorites, though.

Here you get a fair idea of what Stockholm looks like (I live slightly to the left of where the crowd of green spots is located on the map) http://stockholm.arounder.com/

Stockholm on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm

I can't really think of 9 things that make Leixlip standout. Its just a small town on the border of Kildare and Dublin. When I was growing up it had less than 10,000 people, but when I went home last year it has blown up into a place I don't recognise

The one thing we can claim without debate, is that Guinness was first brewed there.
There was also a battle of Confey that took Leixlip back from the Vikings.

Thats two, I'm struggling to think of any more.

1) What city/town, province/state/territory, and country do you live in?
Answer: City of Funchal, located in Madeira Island which belongs to Portugal.

2) What is the population of your city/town?
Answer: Something around 130.000 habitants.

3) If it's not a world-recognized city, what is the nearest big city to you and how far away?
Answer: I'm almost sure it should be, mainly because of the famous fireworks that broke the Guinness World Record in 2006/2007 and it's also Madeira's capital. Anyways, if it's not known I guess Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, probably is

4) Is it industrial, agricultural, on the water, etc.?
Answer: I suppose mainly agricultural, especially on the production of bananas, but also turism has a big impact since it's a very beautiful piece of land, beautiful flowers, landscapes and water all around, great for those that never get out of the big, busy cities

5) Tell us an interesting trivia fact about the city/town -
Answer: "The name ‘Funchal’ comes from a sweet-smelling wild herb called Foeniculum vulgare, more commonly known as fennel, which was abundant in the city when the first settlers arrived."

6) Do you have a local food or drink that is peculiar to your area?
Answer: Well, we have the "Madeira Wine" which as far as I know it's known over the world. Also, we have a bread called "Bolo do caco", it's a very tasty bread, especially if you paste in some garlic butter and sausages or black pudding. We also tend to do "espetadas" which basically consist on putting some meat (mainly cow or pig) into a spit and roast it on a fire. And as a last thing, we have "rebuçados de funcho" (candy of fennel) on which resembles the main idea of the city's name, like mentioned above.

7) If we were to go there on vacation, what's the one thing you'd want us to see or do?
Answer: Everything! The island is amazing for those unfamiliar with these environments, plus it's small! There's time to visit every single place in possibly less than a week!

8) Any current male or female celebs born there?
Answer: Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best footballers these days who is well known all over

9) What's the favorite sports team for your city/town?
Answer: I'm not sure if it's either Nacional or Marítimo
But I think it may be Marítimo
