Rango (2011)
DVD extended version

Not my DVD. My nephew has a 4-year-old.

This flick won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. WTF? I found it boring. This movie obviously received a lot of rave reviews and made over $123 million at the box office. However, one critic called it "soulless." I agree with that.

The movie plods along as it tries to lay out its plot, which bears an uncanny resemblance to an old Flintstones episode where Fred happily becomes the sheriff of a town -- but he's doomed to die (which of course he doesn't). Rango matches this right down to the undertaker making a new pine coffin.

The dialog vocabulary is often above the heads of younger viewers, and some jokes are slightly bawdy and not for kids. At least, they won't understand them (or shouldn't).

To me it seems that Nickelodeon films wanted to exercise ILM's nifty animation rather than think too much about plot and dialog.

Nick's TV series are often as creative and inspired as their Disney counterparts. What happened with this flick?

And I loved the whole Robin/New Batman angle.

But I have a big question that might really be stupid.

When Alfred saw Bruce Wayne at the end, was that real or was that just Alfred's imagination?

I knew Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role was going to be significant in some way. I just didn't realize he'd be the teaser Robin/Next Batman at the very end. Neat trick.

I think Alfred seeing Bruce was real. It was Bruce remembering something Alfred had told him earlier in the movie, so to let him know he was alive and had merely faked his death, he went there and did that so he'd know.

They kept saying auto-pilot didn't work. Even Batman said it before taking the bomb. Yet Fox discovers afterwards that auto-pilot was fixed by Bruce Wayne months ago. A sign he escaped through auto-pilot somehow.

The Dark Knight Rises

Ties up the trilogy decently. Not better than Dark Knight. Barely better than Batman Begins honestly. And that has more to do with the bigger personalities of Bane and Selina Kyle. And Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) does a great job.

Bain is one of the best and strongest villains of any comic inspired film. Not better than Heath Ledger's Joker, but he stands tall. Too many villains just stand back and let their henchmen fight. And barely fight their protagonist. Not Bain. Rather smart too, even though it's still hard to understand what he's saying at times (not all the time) with your mind and ears playing overtime trying to decipher (since lip reading is out of the question)

Here's some real thoughts. *Spoilers*

Some of the plot holes was ridiculous. I'm not sure there was any reason that cement driver was at wall street.
Trapping 3000+ cops underground was so ridiculous. Sending like 90%+ of your police force anywhere like that is a stupid strategy. And then honestly there's no escape route at all? at all?
Then there's Batman. Looking crippled. Suddenly he puts his suit on and he's spry like a 28 year old. That's not a super suit.
Then there's Alfred being whiney scared the whole movie. Yeah you failed the Wayne's. You should've supported him better instead of finally going your way thinking he would follow. Batman needed all the help possible, and Alfred could've helped (possibly get out the bain jail faster)
Miranda was a nice twist. She felt suspicious most of the movie though, always thrusting herself into situations. I knew though she was the kid that escaped the jail, mostly because it was too obvious her protector in there was Bain.
Then she was pulled from Gordon's team that was "exiled".
Oddly enough this was the best anyone has ever treated the Robin character with such respect.
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle was great. Thankfully they didnt do the silly cat-takeover story. It worked this way.

Alfred wasn't whining. He was done. he didn't want to see it anymore, so he quit. There's a difference between whining and getting tired of seeing your surrogate son get ready to nearly kill himself years later once he's past his prime. That's a great toll for anyone to take, and he saw it completely destroy him emotionally once. Why on Earth would he want to do it again. He was left no recourse, and his last hope was that quitting would make Bruce realize that it was time to stop.
Also, Bruce was not at the top of his game as soon as he put the suit on. The complete and utter trouncing Bane gave him showed how truly out of it he was. This was no longer the man who could take on an army by himself. This was an unsure shell of a man who got broken. It was The breaking that enabled him to even come back and fight Bane. What you see at the end is a fully rejuvenated, ready to go Batman. At the start? This is a guy who wishes he was ready to come back and do some heavy lifting, and he was wrong.

^bigthanx to all you "I've just seen Batman" people for your copius usage of the spoiler option - have yet to see it and remain about 95% oblivious as to what happens. (I know Bane's in it and he doesn't like football, but apart from that. shrug ) - so all you spoiler users. <- thumb

Total Recall.

Ok this may be long winded cheeky

First. I wanted just a few things out of this movie, and if I got them I would likely enjoy it since it delivered what I needed it to.
1.Bad ass Kate Beckinsale(my expectation: Salene 2.0)
2.Hot Kate Beckinsale
3.Cool visuals(Len is a visual director)
4.Cool action scenes(this includes cool tech)

I didn't go into this movie giving a shit about the characters or the story... If I happen to like either than bonus points to you Total Recall.

Did it deliver on the 4 things I needed it to? Yes.

Kate Beckinsale was basically a death dealer in this movie except without a soft gooey inside like Salene. She was a death dealer 100% of the time. She wanted blood and that's it. At all costs. This movie also contained the best Kate underwear scene since Whiteout. Kate was a bad ass for sure, even down to that cold hard gaze of hers(more on that later). The action was good and I enjoyed the hand to hand stuff and the scenes where Colin's character is trying to escape since it takes us all through the dingy wet city. And yes visually this movie is quite a spectacle*. I wouldn't expect anything less from Len Wiseman since the biggest reason why I like him is because of his visual style.

I actually enjoyed the story.. bonus point.
I didn't give a fuck about the characters... but honestly I didn't need to to get what i needed from this film.

Now for all intents and purpose this movie is VERY similar to the first two underworld films. Here's why(i'll get to why this matters).
1.Very wet and dark color tones
2.The way in which Kate Beckinsale is shot, like the long pauses on her face as she looks pissed off with that cold evil gaze she has with her mouth open
3. The fight scenes and shoot out scenes... I would venture a guess that the choreography is done by some of the same people. And yes many bullets are shot.. and very few hit their mark... ala subway shootout scene in underworld. Many of the moves Kate's character uses look ripped from the underworld movies. She even jumps down and lands just like Salene..and that famous run.. hah.
4. Visually
5. The tech

Now why I mention this is because if you liked how the underworld movies were directed(first 2) than you'll likely also like this movie. If you thought the underworld films were garbage than you'll likely want to let racoons feast on this one as well.

I went into this movie not giving a shit about the first Total Recall. You shouldn't either. It's not the same movie and I took it as such. Plus I don't even remember the "classic" because like most sci fi "classics" it was probably deserving of a racoon's stomach acid..see what I did there? wink

I am probably the only one that will like this movie for the reasons above. That said I can't grade this movie, because I just don't know how it will hold up on a second watch. I fear I could flip on this movie off a second watch..or... i'll like it still.

I enjoyed it... you will to if you like the stuff I wrote about. Best word to describe it is "cool"

This turtle gives it a thumb

*the special effects are very well done and it looks expensive.

Saw Total Recall as well. Mostly agree with Terrapin.

It has a few nods to the first movie, but otherwise stands on its own. Yes, Jessica Biel is hot, but Kate Beckinsale looks unbelievable. Her director husband really knows how to make her look like the hottest woman on the planet...not that it's altogether that hard. Between Kate's mix of sexiness and bad ass-ness & the effective and fun to watch action scenes, this movie works as an action film.

The movie suffers from a lot of the faults one would expect from an action flick; nonetheless, I found it to be an entertaining two hours at the movie theater.
