People who I consider to be better actors also get lazy from time to time or as they get older or get richer. Johnny Depp does not seem to challenge himself anymore. Robert De Niro too. Jack Nicholson however keeps going strong.
Tina Fey said in her book that a lot of older actors, like De Niro, are always looking for an excuse to be sitting down in a scene.
But yes, Nicolas Cage is another one who stopped trying. Nobody takes him seriously any more, but if you watch certain dramas, like Adaptation or Matchstick Men, he actually is capable of being a good actor. But I guess he's currently only in the mood for fun blockbusters where he can give over the top performances.
Although another thing not everyone considers is that a significant portion of acting is the editing. You could give a brilliant performance, but by chance the editor might end up using all of your worst takes, making you look untalented. I suspect this is why some actors become producers, so they can have a say in which of their takes make it into the final cut.

I agree with everything you said Marvin. Btw, I really enjoyed adaptation. Hated it at first and could not follow it but by the third time I watched it, I was like, wow, great work by Cage.
