Quote:
Although Mitt Romney has virtually locked up the Republican presidential nomination and all of his serious challengers have conceded the race, presidential candidate Fred Karger is still out on the trail campaigning.

Karger, a gay Republican running an issues-based campaign to change attitudes within the GOP about same-sex marriage, took his efforts last week to Utah, which holds the nation's last primary election, on June 26.

Karger spent four days in the state, meeting with local Republican leaders and urging the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to stop funding efforts against gay marriage. (Prior to launching his presidential bid, Karger founded a group called "Californians Against Hate," which focused on Mormon involvement in the campaign to pass Proposition 8, a ballot initiative passed in 2008 banned same-sex marriage.)

During his visit to Utah, Karger met with Washington County Republican Party Chairman Willie Billings, who Karger said was "welcoming" and "friendly." After their meeting, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, Karger gave Billings some campaign paraphernalia, including a Frisbee and a T-Shirt. When Billings brought the souvenirs home, however, his wife, Nanette Billings, threw them in the garbage and fired off an email to Karger, calling him "a radical idiot" and saying "thank goodness" he "cant procreate."

Billings confirmed that she sent the email through Karger's website.

"My feeling is the only reason he's running for president is to find more [sexual] partners," Nanette Billings told Yahoo News in a phone interview. "To get more people on his bandwagon."

"All I did was go on his site and say, 'You're pathetic,'" she said. "We're a very conservative state in Utah, very family-oriented. So he's picked a state just to cause ruckus. He's not thinking of family, he's thinking of himself. He's not running for president to fix something in the country—he's thinking of his own personal agenda, period. And I was just letting him know that I think he's an idiot to think of running."

Karger said he was shocked, but that the email underscores the reason he traveled to Utah in the first place.

"This is what the Mormon church preaches to its members," Karger said in an interview with Yahoo News. "This is not some isolated woman in Utah."

And here's the email:

I think she means 'conservative' but I could be wrong. If that's the case, is that what it means? Believing in the values of the Founding Fathers and God?
Any 'conservatives' wanna take this? What about Mormons?
Looking at you, miner..

So it's acceptable to marry many women, but gay is just evil?

Quote:
The Family
A Proclamation to the World
The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.

Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

Worldly values can spin it all it wants JT...despite popular worldly opinion God does love all his children including gays, lesbians and others who pursue alternate lifestyles..the attraction one may have for another of the same gender can be very powerful and difficult to overcome that is understandable..we all have mortal human weaknesses...but humans are spirit -children of God not animals subjected to thier carnal desires and appetites and I'm not just talking about sexual appetites, gluttony, laziness, greed, anger etc are also a part of our carnal side that must be overcome and they can be overcome if we allow God to help us despite our human weaknesses... and as children of Heavenly parents..we have divine potential to become like them...it may be very unpopular to the world and its intepreptation of progressive values and enlightenment...but the bottom line homosexuality, even it is between consenting adults... is unnatural love and thereby contradicts natural law of procreation.

If this not so then gender male and female..its purpose would be non-existant...we would be as the bacteria simply making copies of ourselves...there would be no need to reproduce by the exchange of DNA of both the mother and father to concieve a child who has inherited its genetic heritage and divine potential.

Now I'm sure Foobar is going add his spin no doubt to my response.

What a non-story. A Gay Republican presidential candidate got a "rough welcome" in southern Utah from the puerile wife of a county GOP chairman. Let's draw from a bigger sample size than...1...before condemning an entire state as a bunch of hateful knuckleheads.

Proposed bill (reintroduced recently) by the Utah State Representative who introduced the Utah statue banning gay marriage.

It would have in effect voided wills, contracts and other financial agreements by anyone in violation of public policy, i.e. homosexual couples, because the state of Utah has no legal recognition of same-sex unions.

This one would exempt Utah citizens from non-discrimination laws if they had to act in a manner contrary to their religious beliefs, i.e. Mormons and homosexuals (though in fairness it could be any religion in Utah.)

Should I go on? I found three 'non-stories' on the first Google page I searched. I'm willing to bet there's a whole lot more.

I see you conveniently left out the paragraphs in the article in which Buttars' comments "prompted concern among Republicans and Democrats alike" and how "several GOP senators had made a point of apologizing for Buttars' comments."

This story is the epitome of what I was talking about previously. A few kooks does not their overlying social group make.

Voiding an agreement rooted in something that is illegal doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. I'd be willing to hear arguments why this is a bad idea, but it seems to be a logical extension of any society countering the recognition of same-sex marriage.

Damn that wily Constitution! Always getting in the way of progressives' agenda of wonder and virtue!

I'm not sure what your concern is, exactly. Are you implying that this bill would cause Utah to be running amok with hate crimes and the like? "Non-discrimination" laws are typically unnecessary, bureaucratic bombast anyway. A crime (i.e., assaulting a gay person, assaulting a straight person, assaulting a one-legged party clown) will be charged as a crime no matter the intent. So I don't see this bill as somehow protecting religious people from stripping gays of their rights.

Bills like this are designed to protect religious people from having auxiliary values shoved down their throats. For example, should the LDS Church be forced to marry gays in their temples (something completely contrary to the purpose of the sealing) if homosexual marriage was the law of the land?

All of them should have. I also left out the part where the bill almost passed.

They're specifically targeting wills, power of attorney, end-of-life decisions...where's your compassion? It's practically a hate crime put in legal form.

Utah's state constitution? I think you're giving a lot of credit to a document that doesn't affect most Americans.

Quote:

With making it legal to discriminate against someone because your god tells you it's ok? Which god? Whose god? What level of discrimination is going to be ok - maybe just non-violent discrimination? Housing? Job? Schools? Medical attention? Only on Saturdays? Only on Sundays? Only during Ramadan? Who interpolates god's will into state law? Etc..

My overarching point is that you picked a bad state and a bad issue to say "it's only one idiot, not representative of the prevailing sentiment." It's pervasive. Think about it - if it had been a gay Democrat, she might have spit in his face before they ran him out of town on a rail, lol.
