Another reason I am against abortion on demand...do we really want follow the route that China took?

By John Parkinson | ABC OTUS News – 3 hrs ago

The House voted today to reject a measure that would have banned sex-selection abortions in the United States, pitting Republicans and Democrats in a showdown over a woman's right to choose, which opponents contended was "intended to chip away at woman's right to obtain safe, legal medical care."

The measure, known as the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), was defeated 246-178. Under suspension of the House rules to permit consideration of the bill more quickly, approval of the measure was subject to a two-thirds majority, and with 414 members voting Republicans fell 30 votes short of passage.

The bill was perceived by Democrats as political maneuver to coax liberal lawmakers into supporting the bill or face the prospect of an onslaught of campaign advertisements this fall highlighting a lawmaker's vote to support sex-selection abortions.

Still, only 20 Democrats took the bait and broke from their party to vote with the majority of Republicans. Seven GOPers opposed the measure.

The House debated the bill Wednesday, but a vote was postponed until Thursday afternoon.

After the plight of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng captured international headlines this month, Republicans had hoped to capitalize on the momentum of that awareness to ensure that sex-selection abortions are not legal in the United States.

Many nations with staunchly pro-choice/pro-abortion rights laws and protections nevertheless ban sex-selection abortions. Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands all have laws banning sex-selection abortions.

Earlier this week, a pro-life group released an undercover video purportedly showing a Planned Parenthood counselor in Texas assisting a woman seeking a sex-selection abortion. Gendercide, the practice of killing baby girls or terminating pregnancies solely because the fetus is female, is estimated to have produced a "gender imbalance" of more than 100 million girls around the world.

"For most of us, Mr. Speaker, 'it's a girl' is cause for enormous joy, happiness and celebration," Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., said on the House floor Wednesday. "But in many countries including our own, it could be a death sentence. Today the three most dangerous words in China and India are, 'It's a girl.' We can't let that happen here."

In any other circumstance, this bill would have sailed through with that vote margin, but the 2/3 majority requirement via suspension of the House rules did leave a high hurdle to pass.

It's nice to see that the Republicans do seem to care about getting on the record with many of these issues, and denying the Democrats the chance to hide behind the lengthy processes through which bills normally pass through the Congress.

I want to see "offense" like this everyday if I'm a Republican. If I were given Mitt Romney and the Republicans' ears at a moment like this, I'd say to them "Deny Obama and the Democrats the chance to control the daily narrative of what is discussed in politics by doing something new and different every day. Make a new announcement, make a new policy decision, heck, make a new campaign staff selection if you have to, but keep the Democrats on the defense about everything, especially Obama. Make the news, don't take the news."

The situation in the US is much different from that in China.

China's policy of 'one child per family' is for population control. The lack of job prospects for women and a huge peasant population mean that aging parents have an excellent chance of dying in abject poverty without a son to support them financially.

Hence, the selective abortion of females.

What happens when you get excess males in a country with a massive rich poor divide (this applies to the USA and China)?

Shortage of rich men, and an excess of average Joes (Jins). Now I'm powerless to correct this large scale social problem, but I do sense an increased demand in porn. I'll invest in some porn companies so I can hopefully become one of those rich men (who are in short supply).

An easier option if for men to keep it in their pants. Or get cut. Boom. No more kids.

i think it`s completely a woman`s decision, what to choose - either give a birth to a child or to make abortion. if she has no livelihood at all, so how will she manage to bring a kid up in a proper way? it`s absurd, there will be no way to ban a normal right of women.

Those are better alternatives than abortion.

There's adoption of course..if the mother has no other means to support herself and the child ..then adption is clearly the best option..abortion is all too often used as a conceptive and it does away sexually responsibilty...one of the reasons why God has given us the law of chasity...and not just the women who has a say..what about the father if he is a part of the picture?

And who is to decide who shall live and who shall die? It is not just a woman's right to choose..they are the vessels of of new life growing within her yes...but it still takes a man and woman to concieve a child and you are not even considering the life of the feotus and too many disregard a feotus up to a certain point as nothing than some lump of living tissue...that you can casually flush down the toilet.

Human beings are not dieties.

Are you on the list to adopt a child?

If not, then don't use that bullshit argument. There's more unwanted children than there are people to adopt them.

I'm all about freedom. If you want an abortion, I could care less. Again, let me state, that the world is overpopulated anyway. Sad, but true. Should we have more bastard children sucking on the government teat whose parents can't take care of them? Is that the answer?

There's nothing worse than people who try to impose their own religious/pseudo-moral beliefs, on other people. It's not up for you to decide, period.
