I've seen this done on other forums, and it worked well there.

The bigger shows can still get their own threads, this is just a place for little thoughts and comments on shows (old and new) that you may be watching, that don't really deserve a thread on their own, but will still (hopefully) stimulate a bit of conversation.

I just thought I might save some space, and be easier for comments to go here, rather than someone creating a thread each time, that may only get a couple of replies.

Anyway, I'll start it off.

Anyone else watch the last episode of House last night? I think the hour I spent on it could have been better spent. Most of the episode was just average:
Click to reveal..
House does heroin with a patient, and wakes up in a burning building with the other guy dead on the floor next to him (od). The rest of the episode is mainly House hallucinating people from his past and having conversations with "them" about his life and choices.

Really hated the swerve at the end:
Click to reveal..
House apparently dies in the fire, with dental records confirming it's him. After his funeral, Wilson finds out he's alive & managed to fake his death. In the last scene, Wilson and House set off on motorcycles to have a buddy bonding trip before Wilson dies from cancer.

Where to begin with my problems with all of this:
Click to reveal..
To start with, most of the episode wasn't great, but it was all right. Average to a little below average. The internal monologues were a decent device to have House reflect on his life, and it allowed them to bring back some pivotal ex-cast members like Kal Penn, Anne Dudek, Jennifer Morrison, and Sela Ward (not a cast member, but played House's ex-wife for a season). That said, the writing wasn't near sharp enough to make this work. House hallucinating Amber and conversing with her in his head called back to the two-parter that killed off Amber at the end of season 4. The writers used the same trick then to much greater effect. And, if House is really conjuring up people from his past to play devil's advocate/act as angels on his shoulder, Cuddy almost certainly has to be one. I'm assuming the lack of Cuddy is due to Lisa Edelstein being unwilling to come back, for whatever reason.

Also, spending most of the episode inside House's head completely neglected the rest of the cast. Wilson and Foreman had a few short scenes, the rest of the cast basically had the episode off. Absolutely no payoff for anyone who liked any of the current supporting cast.

As for the twist ending, ugh, We're supposed to take House faking his death to be a redemptive act. Right before the building seemingly crashes in on him, he comes to a realization that he can change and make different choices. He seemed to be passively suicidal up to this point - content to let the fire kill him - so choosing to live is framed as a change of mindset. The problem is that it's the same old crap he's always pulled. The character has always been self-destructive & the writers increasingly resorted to deus ex machina macguffins to let him get away with it without the full weight of the consequences. Faking your own death isn't noble or heroic. It's cruel to the people who mourn House and cowardly in that, once again, it lets House walk away from the consequences of his actions (jail time, mostly). It's not convincingly established that this will lead to meaningful change or even that the character can live without Vicodin and puzzles. The ending is supposed to be House's redemption, but it seemed to me more like a furthering of the status quo.

In part, the problem with redeeming House is that writer's let did this sort of thing before and it never took, probably because the people in charge of the show were scared to change the status quo overmuch. Wilson severed their relationship before, without it causing this much reflection. House gave up Vicodin and tried to be a nicer person after his stay in the institution. House's behavior landed him in jail. The problem is that the writers mostly treated this occurrences like sweeps month stunts (which they were) and House went back to his old ways relatively easily,

Also, for House to survive the fire and fake his own death, he basically has to become a super hero. He had passed out from doing heroin and woken up in a burning building. Later, he falls through a hole in the floor and drops to the level below. He lays there awhile surrounded by flames, so we can assume he's suffering from smoke inhalation. And then Wilson sees him at the front door as the building collapses on top of him and explodes. Somehow, in his condition, he managed to get to a back door very fast, walk out unnoticed, and somehow sneak into the hospital (or the coroner's office?) and switch his dental records with those of a recent patient? Wow.

The feel-good swerve ending also invalidated a speech Wilson gives earlier in the episode about teaching House how to live without him. And they never did explain why the building was on fire in the first place or any of a dozen other questions).

Ugh. I could go on for an hour. The more I write about the ep, the worse I feel about it. Terrible way to end the show. House was a great show the first few years, and Laurie elevated the material to the very end, but they probably should have stopped a few seasons ago. For every good character moment or episode these past few years, they followed up with something awful.

The problem is exactly as you describe: The writers went to that well too many times. Most of S8 seemed like it was filler and added almost nothing to the characters that couldn't have been done with a 2-hour movie or 4-part miniseries following S7.

I didn't mind the swerve at the end, mostly because I've grown weary of Edgy Finale Syndrome that has permeated television. But yeah, there's nothing to indicate this time wouldn't be another teflon epiphany.

I really need to find the time to go back to Vampire Diaries.

I have the first 2 seasons on DVD, and watched season 1 when it aired on ITV2, but I haven't got around to watching season 2 or 3 yet.

Couple of things, I caught up on from the past week;

So I just caught the season finale of Glee (yes I watch Glee) and I pretty much enjoyed it. Interesting to see the path that the main people are taking and it felt like a satisfying end in a lot of ways. I liked the twist at the end for Finn / Rachel / Kurt as it wasn't what I was expecting. I thought that this should have been the series finale instead of season finale. Still find it hard to believe they're doing another season. While the people that haven't graduated have some quality characters I'm not sold on them being the stars of the group. And how are they going to track the graduates? I am curious about all that but this has to be the final season.

Hey, awesome, Phil Phillips won Idol. He was one of my favorite throughout. I always liked him, but I wasn't a massive fan of the DMB style he had a lot of the season. Then he covered Seger and I was totally sold on him.

"Home" was definitely my favorite original Idol song. Had a big Chris Martin meets Decemberists type sound. Such an awesome song. Even brought some tears to my eyes. That will for sure be the "wedding song" this year.

When his album comes out I'll be curious how many songs he writes be it on his own or with others.

I hated New Girl at first. Didn't like the cast. Didn't think it was funny.

I saw the first 7 episodes randomly over time.

Then my brother was watching it the other night and I sat down because I wanted to hang out. It got funny. Really funny. Schmitt is a hilarious character. I ended up watching the rest of the season in 2 days cheeky
.......

Happy Endings is the most consistently funny show on TV.

.......

Jane Levy is the stand out new TV Star(Suburgatory)

.......

Apt 23 is great. It is going to be one of my favorites shows I think come next season.

New Girl was my 4th favorite sitcom of the year (after 2 Broke Girls, Suburgatory and Apt 23). It got off to a slow start, but it really picked up around mid-season. Also, Schmitt is fucking great.

Loved the episode where Zooey's dudes daughter is in love with Nick.

Really need to get around to watching season 2 of Happy Endings. As I enjoyed season 1.

Enjoyed all of Suburgatory (I can't hate anythiung that has Alan Tudyk in it), except the addition of Alicia Silverstone's character towards the end.

Totally agree that Apt 23 is awesome! Ritter and Walker love are really great, and Van Der Beek just gets more awesome with each episode.

The Dean Cain and Kevin Sorbo episodes were especially great.

2 broke girls is a terrible terrible show. so badly written. Make Caroline into such an annoying character. Despite Beth's best efforts.

I only liked apt 23 and suburgatory for awhile as far as new sitcoms but now I like new girl too. The rest were crap IMO. I didn't really pick up any new dramas this season. I don't think...

season 2 of happy endings is rofl every week. Def catch up on that! Damon Wayans Jr was the comedic actor of the season! brilliant!

Dreama Walker love She's such a star. She's amazing.
