Hell yes, 100 times better than the "remake" a few years ago.
Both were good, both had flaws. The 2007 remake had Sophia Bush, whose character had much more motivation to be involved than Jennifer Jason Leigh's character. That (the waitress getting involved with the motorist) was a huge weakness. Hauer and Bean both were great in their roles as The Hitcher. Hauer had the eyes going, and the hint of homosexuality between Hauer and the motorist was a big factor in creating tension in the Hauer version. Bean plays his role equally as well, but it is written differently than the original. Much of the suspense of the original is replaced by gore. While Hauer's Ryder concentrates on Jim, Bean's Ryder seems to be more fascinated with Grace (Sophia Bush). This homosexual tension in the original is replaced in the remake by heterosexual tension.
To sum up my feelings, I'm glad Sophia Bush didn't get torn apart by trucks.
This was the film that made me fall in love with Denzel Washington
Fag!
Great movie.
One of the few remakes that blows the original out of the water.
