I honestly couldn't say that dbl isn't intelligent, which I would think (and he's made statements to this effect) is why he's not religious. However, if you picture a spectrum of religiosity, he's the closest you can get to that section of the spectrum where people actually believe in a god, without actually falling within it.

Just out of curiosity, do you define 'religious' as the belief in God or Gods, etc., or as one that follows a particular religion? Following that, was your intention to imply that only people of lesser intelligence believe in a God or Gods, etc.?

I admit I just responded to what is an intangible, but, in any case, your statement doesn't contradict JT's.

EDIT: or will cause mass-murder, or whatever it was.

Not really he has always stated he's agnostic but he acknowledged the positive contributions religion particularly christianity has had in western societies...that doesn't make make him a closet religious person but rather because he is well immersed in world history.

Something that you seem to lack when it comes to the history of atrocities committed under communist countries for example.

Isn't the point about the Bible this: if it was a document inspired by the Christian God, wouldn't one expect it not to simply repeat what Jewish and other societies were currently saying about slavery, but would be ahead of its time and be condemning slavery? If God was able to explain to Moses how he could take the Jews back into Israel, was it not possible for him to say - 'Oh, and by the way, slaves? That's a no-no. Sorry, commercial problems and so on, but it's just wrong.' It would have made a perfectly acceptable 11th commandment: 'Thou shalt not own another person'.

Christians of course want it both ways. When the Bible accords with modern morals, it is praised but when it contradicts they want to be able to pick and choose which bits to hold onto - no homosexuals, as they believe - and which bits to dump - it's perfectly OK to own slaves.

Whether it qualifies as a Christian country by your standards I do not know, but Britain most certainly is 'officially Christian'. The Church is established, clerics sit in the House of Lords, the basic unit of government is the parish - of which the parish church hall is usually the meeting place, the head of State - the Queen, but beware of making the Palin error - is the head of the Church of England, etc. etc.

I haven't heard of a strong correlation between those two things. Or that there was a necessary causality.

The history of what under which countries?

The first.

Dblboggie likes to say that he's the furthest from being religious as you can possibly be.

However, he's also completely unable to admit that religion has easily had just as many NEGATIVE contributions, and has, no matter how inane the "religious side" has gotten, supported them. Even back in the EE_EE days.

It's on of the reasons I consider his period of "moderation" one of the worst and most abhorrent examples of a forum moderator I have EVER seen.
