But that's a very good example. When law enforcement executes a raid on an illegal operation, they don't give advanced notice, they just do it. If they said in advance that they were going to take down MegaUpload, the people who run it would have purged their servers to get rid of the evidence.

And guess what, they wouldn't have purged just the illegal stuff. Everything would have been gone anyway.

Regardless, it seems at the end of the day, the action was taken that was most consistent with government's attempt to catch those guys red-handed. Everything else, including the rights and business dealings of the users, regardless of the legality of the nature of their dealings, was not a concern of the government at all.
