being in Arizona, the only hockey i usually get to see is the Coyotes. because of this, i saw Shane Doan get his first career hat trick last night.
the guy has played over 1,100 games and had 39 career 2 goal games, tying him with Petr Sykora for most without a hat trick. it was filled with drama too.
Doan got his 2nd in the 2nd period so in the 3rd you could see everybody was giving him the puck. he had chance after chance and it looked like it was gonna be the 40th 2 goal game of his career. with 6 seconds left, he was in his defensive zone and Ray Whitney started the final rush up the ice. Doan joined him and the whole way up, Ray was looking for him. they crossed the blue line into the offensive zone with about 2 seconds left when Ray smacked the puck over to Shane. Doan fired and with less than .5 seconds left he scored. they reviewed it to see if time had expired but it counted.
the arena sounded and the team celebrated like they'd just won the Stanley Cup.

Finally a Boston player who doesn't get the immunity!
I was watching that game, and just saw the replay a couple times on NHLN's news program. When I watched the game, it looked like a vicious hit by Marchand. After seeing the replay, Salo was the one who was skating toward Marchand, who was stationary and just ducked. Now, I know that Marchand is known for low hits, but it also looks like he was trying to protect himself.
NHLN reported that Marchand has talked to the league about these sort of situations, and they told him there'd likely be no punishment if you were trying to protect yourself. The Bruins feel this ruling goes against that advisory.
The Bruins' organization's official response:
Quote:
Bruins respond to Marchand suspension
Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli just released a statement in response to the NHL’s five-game suspension of Brad Marchand.
“While we respect the process that the Department of Player Safety took to reach their decision regarding Brad’s hit on Sami Salo, we are very disappointed by their ruling.
“While we understand that the Department of Safety is an evolving entity, it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.
“It is equally disappointing that Brad sought the counsel of the Department this past Fall for an explanation and clarification regarding this type of scenario so as to adjust his game if necessary. He was advised that such an incident was not sanctionable if he was protecting his own safety.
Given our feeling that Brad was indeed protecting himself and certainly did not clip the player as he contacted the player nowhere near the knee or quadricep, today’s ruling is not consistent with what the Department of Player Safety communicated to Brad.”
It is believed that Marchand asked about this type of hit when director of player safety Brendan Shanahan was in Boston recently to go over various rules with players, when coincidentally Shanahan heard Marchand’s case for slew-footing Pittsburgh Matt Niskanen. Marchand was fined $2,500 for that infraction.

Thanks for the info, ddpahc. Sounds good to me. I'm actually glad he was suspended... maybe now the sports world and fans alike can move on and stop acting like these types of things only happen in Boston. It must be tough being a bitter fan.

I think it was in the playoffs last year that the Sharks' Joe Thornton came out of the sin bin and was headed toward the bench to go immediately off the ice when he collided with an opposing player coming up ice not five feet out of the box. Joe got a charging call and a game misconduct. He never saw the guy. It was really just a random accidental collision. Not all punishments handed down by the refs and league are fair. This was one of 'em.
I'm sure every fan of every NHL team has several stories like that one.
Did I mention I hate Gary Bettman? I thought I should re-mention it. I'm sure nearly every fan of every NHL team does, too. What a dick he is.
I am not proud to say I was a fan of the California Seals. What a shitty team that was! Although, I did go to a game where Dennis Maruk got a hat trick, Phil Esposito got a garbage rebound goal, and the Seals actually won the game.
