Dwight Howard is preparing to ask the Orlando Magic to trade him to the New Jersey Nets, according to sources close to the situation. hyper

Howard's representatives have told the Nets that they are his preferred destination.

Howard has yet to tell the Magic he will not re-sign with them after this season, but the sources said he will within the next few days, perhaps as early as Friday. There is also a chance that Howard will not attend the opening of training camp Friday, according to a source.

As ESPN.com reported last week, the Nets are ready to offer the Magic a package built around center Brook Lopez and two first-round draft picks, New Jersey's own and one the Nets acquired from Houston in a previous trade, according to sources.

New Jersey is also willing to take back Hedo Turkoglu and the three years, $34 million remaining on his deal.

The appeal of the Nets for Howard is the chance to play with All-Star point guard Deron Williams and the Nets' move into a new arena in Brooklyn for the start of the 2012-13 season.

Williams and Howard spoke several times about teaming up during the lockout.

If Howard is indeed committed to joining the Nets, he can all but force the Magic to make the trade by declaring his intentions not to sign a long-term contract with any other team, thereby assuring that those clubs make low-ball offers to Orlando.

Howard's decision to go to the Nets would put a monkey wrench in the Los Angeles Lakers' plan to team Howard with Kobe Bryant by trading Andrew Bynum for the Magic center.

The Nets are continuing to pursue free agent center Nene in case their plan to acquire Howard falls through.

Chris Broussard is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

It's possible Dwight is saying he's interested in the Nets so the Magic can negotiate the best deal possible. If it seems like he is only interested in one team, and so far it seemed like the Lakers, then that team would have an advantage knowing they are the only team the Magic can work with. Now if the Lakers go after Dwight they'll have to do more than just Bynum. Which may have been what they thought they could do considering they were already going to give up Pau and Odom

I'm not sure anyone has ever said he wanted to go to the lakers. It's more of a media propaganda thinking he's gonna go like Shaq and other Laker centers. I think this the first I heard anything about any team.

I hope he goes to NJ, soon to be Brooklyn. Him and D-Will can start something nice. Unlike baseball with the Mets and Yanks, the Nets only need a couple of titles to match the Knicks and a Dwight Howard to maybe be the dominant team in NY. Why be compared to Shaq, Kareem, and Wilt when you can make your own dynasty in a big city.

It is the first we're hearing about any other team, and that was the problem. If it's assumed the player will only sign an extension with one team then that team can lowball the Magic. If the Lakers thought they could just swap Bynum for Dwight that's what they would be doing. At least one thing this Nets announcement does is get rid of the handcuffs the 'will only sign with one team' belief creates.

But, it may very well be true anyway. If the Lakers giving up two key players for Paul was nixed why would a trade for him fair any better? And I don't think the Laker team is going to be a happy place right now. The Lakers aren't looking like a great place to go right now.

Chris Paul to the LA Clippers

Quote:
The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal in principle with the league-owned New Orleans Hornets to acquire guard Chris Paul, according to sources close to the process.

The Clippers, sources said, will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul.

The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks, according to sources.

The deal is expected to be approved by the league Wednesday night, sources said.

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, whose team had been pursuing Paul earlier this month before commissioner David Stern vetoed a potential trade, thought the trade would be good for the city of L.A.

"It's good to see them (the Clippers) being that aggressive and wanting to make the next step," he said. "They got Blake (Griffin), who I think the world of him and CP (Paul) who I like as well, so, I think it's good for L.A. to have two teams that are competitive."

Dwight Howard is staying in Orlando

Quote:
The Orlando Magic abruptly pulled Dwight Howard off the trade market Wednesday in the midst of discussions with other teams, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Magic have decided that none of the various offers they've received, most notably from the New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Lakers, is worth executing.

So the Magic, sources said, began informing teams Wednesday that they're no longer fielding calls for the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Earlier Wednesday, ESPN.com reported that the Nets and Magic were in advanced discussions on a multi-team deal that would have paired Portland Trail Blazers swingman Gerald Wallace with Nets center Brook Lopez as the two main players Orlando would have received in a trade package for Howard in addition to future draft considerations and the right to shed the long-term contracts of Hedo Turkoglu and Chris Duhon.

Yet sources say that Magic officials, after consultation with ownership Wednesday, decided to stick to their belief that they can still win Howard over and convince him to extend his contract despite Howard's repeated vows to opt for free agency in July. New Magic CEO Alex Martins, promoted to the position after last week's surprising resignation of Bob Vander Weide, insisted as much to reporters Monday, saying that the organization was not yet prepared to field offers for the All-Star center.

"I'm an optimist," Martins said. "I am confident that we can work with Dwight and convince him to stay here long term."

That hasn't stopped the Brooklyn-bound Nets from continuing to lob trade pitches at the Magic. Sources say they were prepared to include five future first-round picks in the deal to satisfy both the Magic and the Blazers, who wanted multiple first-rounders in exchange for surrendering Wallace and facilitating the trade. The Nets, sources said, offered to sweeten the deal for Orlando and Portland by including their own first-round picks in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 as well as a 2012 first-rounder previously acquired from Houston.

Sources maintain that Howard, however, continues to press for a trade in his dealings with Magic officials. And New Jersey has been targeting Howard for months, convinced that pairing him with All-Star guard Deron Williams now will convince both Team USA stalwarts to make long-term commitments to the Nets and new owner Mikhail Prokhorov in the summer. The Nets' push only intensified Tuesday night after their top free-agent target, Denver Nuggets center Nene, reached terms with Denver on a new five-year, $67 million deal.

The Nets also know they could well have to fend off the Los Angeles Lakers, who have long been linked with a possible trade for Howard with an offer built around young center Andrew Bynum. The Nets, though, privately believed they were in the lead for Howard as of Wednesday morning, with the Lakers known to be dangling Pau Gasol to re-enter the Chris Paul trade sweepstakes and the Magic determined to hold out for bringing back both Gasol and Andrew Bynum if they ever consent to trade Howard to L.A.

The Nets, Lakers and Dallas Mavericks -- who are amassing the requisite salary cap space to pursue both Howard and/or Dallas-area native Deron Williams in the summer of 2012 -- are the only teams that the Magic had granted Howard's agent, Dan Fegan, permission to speak to this month about possible trade scenarios.

Howard himself is known for changing his views on his future on a near-daily basis, torn by his desire to move to a more glamorous market such as Brooklyn or Los Angeles and the prospect of staying with the team that drafted him and delivering the championship to Orlando that Shaquille O'Neal could not.

Martins met with Howard one-on-one Monday and Howard emerged sounding as if he'd softened on the possibility of leaving town -- as long as the Magic some unspecified changes.

"I love this city, there is no place I'd rather be but Orlando," Howard said. "I just want to make sure we have the right things here so we can win a championship. I'm all about change. If you're willing to change and you're willing to do what it takes to win then, you know, you got me."

On Tuesday, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported that the Lakers, Nets, Mavericks and Magic are the only four teams Howard is willing to commit to long-term. In a SportsCenter interview Wednesday morning, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban acknowledged that Dallas has "had discussions" with Howard's representatives but stressed that they were merely exploratory.

Howard is not staying unless they can get trade other players for another star. If the team stays intact or do some corny moves, they're not going anywhere but to a mid-season trading of Howard for probably what they are getting offered now or less (unless the Lakers get desperate).

Knicks waste money today by signing Baron Davis.

Instead of signing the likes of Bibby and Davis they could have had Chris Paul if they had waited for Melo to hit free agency, and used the pieces they traded for Melo and used them to trade for Paul.

Baron Davis is a bargain. Not sure if it's a good move though, as he too can be selfish and turnover prone. And injured.

Knicks management is dumb and way too quick on the trigger. Amare and Tyson are way overpayed. Billups was too. And like you said they gave up too much for Melo. Lets see how this circus plays out this year.

I'm still holding out for Howard to NJ.

Let's see... so I waited these years to get under the cap and rid of huge contracts and I get rewarded with 2 "stars" with huge contracts and a grossly overpaid defensive player on a team without any defense. And then a backcourt of Mike Bibby and Baron Davis.I guess Isiah Thomas never did leave
