It looks like theirs certain benefits for marring Certain NPC's.

Camilla Valerius (Found in Riverwood) - She will open a Shop & you will receive the Profits from the Shop.
Ysolda (Found in Whiterun) - She will give you 100 Gold every day & ability to trade with her.

upon joining The DB, you get this version, and a similar Mage Robe Variant (if you look around and pick it up)

Theirs also a Ancient Version of that armor later on in the Brotherhood quests, It's allot more powerful.

My copy of the game arrived on Friday but I'm going to get my brother to give me the money for it and he can keep it for me for christmas

yeah you can remove it like any helmet, just like in Oblivion, there's even a version of just the hood and without the ninja mask

Mask of the Grey Fox, also a fun tricket to murder a shitloads of fuckers creating a hell of a bounty, then take it off and the guards keep searching running past you and no bounty on your head
