Interesting. I'll give it some thought , but the two that came to mind straight away when I saw the thread title, even before I opened it, were Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer and A-Ha's Take on Me... which then both turned out to be among JJ's suggestions, so I guess I second their nomination!

Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake - Maybe "creative" is not the word, but it was original because I'd never seen it done before. Basically they just gave random people on the street some headphones to listen to the song and filmed their reactions to it and used it for the music video.
The Hell Song by Sum 41 - Filmed using toys and action figures, not in stop-motion and before Robot Chicken, and makes reference to some recent (at the time) news and media events while still being a video about the band playing with toys.
