An interesting read however Mr. Russell fails to explain or chooses to leave out a lot of details among other things how morality originated or how mankind and science on thier own merits have yet to bring about a utopian society.

His philosophy is hardly new, and many before and after him will continue to miss the point of the whole matter.

Atheists and materialists have a weak explanation on how human morality originated.

Behaving morally does not require an explanation.

Okay Cut...then please enlighten us how morality and ethics came about regardless of a higher being/intelligence as a guiding hand to teach us a better way?

Because humans have been screwing up things on thier own since they first appeared on earth.

And you cannot pin that one on conservatives and republicans. giggle

To think that being, say, a Muslim is somehow 'close enough' for the Christian God is a huge mistake (if the Christians are correct). This sort of equivocation would ENRAGE him.

The thing is that the jew/christian and muslim readily acknowledge Abraham as thier ancestor, and if Abraham was a prophet of God, the same God of the Jews or Christians...why would muslims react so angrily to the fact that Allah is the same being whom the Jews and the Christians also worship?

Ya know, it totally fcuking disgusting how a minority of religious people have hijacked the concept of morality and pretend that it's their own invention. Christianity at the dawn of the 21st century is a bit over a billion people. Add in the Muslims and Jews, and call 2 billion. There are about 6.5 billion people total. Now these 2 billion that include Christians, Muslims, and Jews, include people who fly airplanes into office buildings. It includes people who blow up schools. It includes people who tie black men to crosses and burn them. It includes lynchers. It includes criminals and mass murderers of every description. It includes people who sent millions of Jews and gypsies to the gas chambers. And they never even considered the possibility that they might be doing something wrong. It includes Jews who think they are entitled to throw Muslims out of the homes they've inhabited for 1500 years.

In other words, Christians, Muslims, and Jews, are vermin.

You simply cannot make the case that believing in the god of Abraham and Moses makes a person any better than any pagan, atheist, agnostic, budist, Hindu, animalist, or whatever.

You can't make the case, because it isn't true.

Worshiping the god of Abraham does not make a person moral. Worshiping Jesus does not make a person moral. Fear of hell and eternal damnation does not make a person moral.

Otherwise how can so many Christians, Muslims, and Jews, be vermin? And how can so many people who are not those things be good?

I for one believe that organized religion has the greatest guilt of bloodshed. I've been very vocal about it through the years here.

But. Here comes the big BUT.

That still doesn't make the case that "behaving morally does not require an explanation".

That statement is oversimplification.

Not really. People behave morally because it's in their best interest to. And because they've been educated to do so. Nothing spectacular is required.

You conviently miss the part about human nature Cut...it's extremely convenient to blame religion or even God (just as you typically do when it comes to blaming conservatives/republicans for the sorry economic state America, and the rest of the world is currently in) for all the ills of the world.

But God was not the one who incites men to kill one another, hatred/envy and pride in the hearts of men all too often are the root of human misery. There is also the matter of the devil who entices people to do things that are contrary to God's will.Unfortunately people dismiss the existance of such a being.

Even if you took away all the religions of world, humans will still find a way to hate and kill one another.

That is an indisputable truth.

So how did the concept of morality and ethics originate then if not from God himself?
