The only four that seem to be revered as actual deities would be Azathoth (who seems to be an embodiment of chaos, entropy, and destruction), Yog-Sothoth (time, space, and parallel dimensions), Shub-Niggurath (fertility, fecundity, and mutation), and Nyarlathotep (the only entity that takes anything resembling an interest in humanity, also the only one that seem to have some sort of goal, as indiscernible as that goal might be).

But even those four could simple be said to be exceedingly powerful alien entities, as far above the lesser beings like Great Cthulhu as he is above us.

I thought the Azathoth description was quite frightening. On a side note I have been looking at pictures of Lovecraft's Cthulhu, and I have decided that the the Illithid or Mind Flayers from Dungeons and Dragons were definitely based upon it.
