This is not a hobbiest gun but a crude way to get ones hands on a gun usually to commit a murder or to be used in gang shootings or other such applications.

I think you seriously underestimate the ingenuity of smugglers. As many people and tons of drugs that get smuggled across the border every day, guns would be just as easy.
