I thought Conan did a great job. He stayed true to himself like both Carson and Leno did before him when they both got the job. I wish Conan nothing but the best with The Tonight Show and I obviously look forward to anything new that he brings to the show.

CoCo's 'Tonight' wins first week despite ratings slide

Conan friday Conan O'Brien's first week behind NBC's "Tonight Show" desk resulted in a strong overall ratings performance that dominated competitors and left critics generally pleased.

But after debuting to record-setting numbers Monday, “The Tonight Show” audience has shrunk with each successive episode.

O'Brien's "Tonight" premiere garnered a massive 7.1 overnight metered-market household rating, then dropped 30% on Tuesday (5.0), slipped 14% on Wednesday (4.3), went down 12% on Thursday (3.8) and fell 8% on Friday (3.5).

While Conan's debut was the highest-rated Monday episode of the veteran franchise in four years, last night was the lowest-rated Friday episode of "Tonight" in six months.

Yet Friday's number could also be a sign the O'Brien's out-of-the-gate decline is slowing. Competitors were likewise down by a similar percentage when comparing Thursday to Friday.

Also, the first week of O'Brien's "Tonight" has averaged a 4.7 rating in the summer -- 21% higher than Jay Leno's second quarter average with the show. Several clips from "Tonight" have also received heavy online viral play, including one with Barack Obama endorsing the host that received considerable coverage.

"Tonight" beat second-place CBS' "Late Show" by a 62% margin this week. The gap between O'Brien and Letterman narrowed nearly each night, however, with the CBS program pulling a 2.7 on Friday.

I always liked Conan, but I just can't stand his second-rate guests like Will Ferrell. Get better guests damn it! I am finding myself switching to Letterman just to get a glimpse of his guests. Sandra Bullock is no superstar but no way am I watching Norm Macdonald on Conan. I'll put up with Letterman's absurd humor if that's what it takes:)

He's getting better guests now than on Late Night. Because he's in LA he'll get alot more stars. But sometimes the current movie stars are in NYC.

The biggest star he's had has been Eddie Murphy, whose last two movies have been bombs on the hydrogen level...

I don't watch for the guests, I watch cos CoCo is funny. The guests are really just an occasional bonus.

it's still good, just watered down from Late Night in my opinion. Also they're trying to do too many new things (calling him CoCo all the time, the twitter thing, etc.) Just stick with what got him there.

Leno to Conan is a huge leap in talent and natural comedic ability.

leno was good never on the funny level of conan or fergison my opinion of course.

Leno was for the Granny's. He's funny but he (and Letterman) have a bad habit of running a joke into the ground, Conan knows when to stop. Conan is 10 times funnier when things go wrong, and things often went wrong on Leno's show.

Jay Leno was a great salesman of comedy, but his jokes were mostly about sex--and funny. But I definitely liked him much more than Letterman's absurdist humor. Ferguson has that funny perverted face so his material isn't great but I love his facial expression.

Conan is also funny not so much for his material but the way he looks and acts, with his hair, his height, and unusually pale face, and general body language.

Letterman is at the bottom in my book.

Leno was always lowest common denominator. His comedy is simple and uncomplicated and easy to "get" -- you never feel like he's talking over your heads. When a celebrity comes on, he basically fawns all over them. And when a politician comes on, he asks simple questions and never makes anybody actually think. A lot of people liked that.

Letterman's humor is cutting. Sometimes you have to think about it, and sometimes you won't get all of it. When a celebrity comes on, they have a real conversation, and Letterman will not accept BS -- check when Joaquin Phoenix and Rod Blagojevich were on last year and he did not let the skate. And when a politician comes on, Letterman is scrupulously prepared about their position and a pointed, deep, intelligent discussion that is anything but fawning. And a lot of people don't like that -- they want their late-night entertainment simple, plain, and bland.

I'm not going to bother replying to you're over simplification of Conan's comedy, but I will point out that I wasn't insulting Leno by saying things went wrong. I was making the same point you just did for people who would deny he ever made a mistake.

I've always seen Leno as the jackass of the group. He would make too much jokes, some kind of harsh, about celebs. And they'd still show up, even days later or before. He even made a living of humiliating common (but dumb) people via his Jaywalking segments. Yes he did tell more jokes of the group, as Letterman and Conan are sitting down just a few minutes after being introduced.

In my opinion now, Conan was not made for 1135p. He can get away with his more childish humor at 1235a. He can still do alot of that, but he needs to change and add more to his repertoire

Well, humor comes in many forms but to make people laugh and not offend anyone is extremely hard. So explicit or implicitly comedians can get away with racism, sexism, agism, etc...

Hollywood and show business in general is a cirus. I am not surprised that celebs don't mind being the butt of jokes. To be in movie business, you leave your values at the door. I think even if you stubbornly refuse to that, you get dragged through the mud enough times, you simply can not hold on to any self-respect. I am not even talking about sleeping your way to the top. It's all these crappy role, bad writing, nonsensical plot consisting of action plus nudity and some oversimplified bigoted view of the world. Indie film is too painful to make. If you wanna make the big bucks and pay the bills, go with the program.

In conclusion, celebs know and talk show hosts know too. I personally think it's more humiliating to be on Dancing with the Stars.

In regards to Dancing With The Stars, I think humiliation comes not only from the desperation that lead some "stars" to appear on it (which you addressed), but also from allowing themselves to be vulnerable and take on a challenge knowing full well they could embarrass themselves on live TV. I mean if I was Maurice Greene with Olympid medals around my neck, I'd rather remain the national hero than be remembered as the guy wearing pink who couldn't shake his hips so good (can't remember the judges' exact comments too well--but you get what I mean).

Leno sucks.

Leno did the common denominator jokes, mostly focused on sex. And he overdid that, and it was a turnoff to some. Some didn't like his "jay" walking and making fun of people who didn't know politics. And of course if you don't like his personality or his laugh or his chin...whatever, you not gonna enjoy him.

BUT

His sex jokes WERE funny often. He was excellent with political humor, focusing on days events, and would often hit you with several great jokes back to back focusing on politics, economy, whatever. He was a comic genius. I learned more about politics watching him than anybody else.

He had fantastic guests on, the sexiest celebs and famous politicians. His laughter was contagious, and even when the joke didn't work, you'd find yourself laughing with him.

Many famous comediens got their start either on his show or with his help. He was very good friends with Jerry Seinfeld, another great comedian. If you need long pauses and random absurdist humor (Letterman) or the "masturbating bear" (Conan) to start laughing, Leno was not your kind of show.

Don't you dare insult the masturbating bear! I've never laughed so hard as when the masturbating bear was revealed to be Jim Carrey.

Fallon aint too great but he has potential. I stopped watching him cos I keep running out of room on my DVR but maybe one day I'll give him another chance.

Actually right now I'm enjoying Letterman the most of all of them, there's a casualness about him I really like and he's hands down the best interviewer of them all.

LOS ANGELES – Conan O'Brien hit his head during a stunt for the "Tonight Show," an accident that halted production and brought back memories of a rare absence by his predecessor in the job.

But while NBC canceled two episodes of "Tonight" when Jay Leno fell ill in May, there was no word from the network on plans for next week's shows following O'Brien's mishap.

O'Brien was examined Friday at a hospital. The network declined comment on his condition or whether he had been released.

O'Brien issued a statement through NBC that indicated he was treating the incident lightly.

"Last thing I remember I was enjoying the play with Mrs. Lincoln, and the next thing I knew I was in bed being served cookies and juice" O'Brien said in the statement.

A "Tonight" rerun with guest Jeremy Piven aired Friday. According to NBC's Web site, the scheduled show was to include Teri Hatcher and Seth McFarlane ("Family Guy," "The Cleveland Show").

The 46-year-old comedian took over the "Tonight" host's job from Leno in June.

Leno's absence came toward the end of his 17 years with the show, when a high fever and unspecified illness caused him to check himself into a hospital for a day.

NBC canceled two episodes of "Tonight" when that occurred in May. Leno's new daily prime-time comedy show debuted this month.

NBC's decision to remove the top-rated Leno from "Tonight" and replace him with O'Brien, hoping to draw a younger audience, put pressure on the new host's shoulders.

The network's creation of a daily prime-time series for Leno, displacing five hours of scripted shows, was another bold move.

I like Conan's new show, but I'm really digging what Jimmy Fallon is doing with Late Night. Never could stand Leno, and his new show is worse than ever. I like Letterman, but could never get into Ferguson either.

To me Fallon is failing. His monologue and pre-interview stuff is corny and boring. I've never been a Craig Ferg fan, but recently I've been watching and liking his show better.

Fallon has to find what works and what doesn't. So far it's painful to watch. It might take him a year or two, unless he gets pulled before then.

It took Conan years to get into the groove, Jimmy i still very new.


Craig ferg is the best talk show host. He get's 100% out of every one of his guests.

Being a wrestling fan, I'd heard about Hogan recently, but had missed his TV appearances. I told myself I couldn't possibly miss him on Jimmy's show.

It was awesome he also had Ed Norton (I'm a big fan), & "Weird Al", who I've been into for maybe a decade.

It would've been the perfect show except for the host.

I wasn't sure when I thought about Conan taking over & Jay staying on TV, but at least now I have the chance to watch Conan & Craig, & avoid the Crap.
