According to their terms, for OEM versions, they'll only send you a new activation key for a motherboard that needed to be replaced because of a defect. From what I've been reading, sometimes they don't even allow that. I guess you'd have to be very convincing. People that build new systems on a regular basis typically try that fib so they can install their already purchased copies on new PCs.
oh, right... oem... not many people buyin off the shelf systems then upgrading the motherboards...
i've only ever bought software at retail... no oem fer me...
If you have a retail copy of XP, you should be able to install that copy on a completely different system. That's the only benefit of retail over OEM. For the price difference with Ultimate, I could just buy another OEM copy and it would still be cheaper than purchasing the retail copy.
Another thing with OEM Vista is you either get a 32-bit or 64-bit version, you have to select one. The retail comes with both DVDs. You also get no technical support. OEM is perfect for me.
yeah... can't really picture you callin microsoft tech support...

Hey, Birthday boy.
Hey chief, how goes it.
Pretty good. How's your day going?
Eh. Ok I guess. My brothers family wanted to meet for dinner and I wound up paying for my moms and my own meal (cheap bastard). Then I lost a few bucks at the casino. But at least I made it home with out trouble.
