It seems to me that a majority of this forum's users are American. If this is indeed the case, I find it odd that there's no thread dedicated to your version of football. Despite being English, I've been a big fan of it for, hmmmm, about fifteen years now, I suppose, and have supported the 49ers throughout that time (yes, even for the last couple of years!). I have a reasonable(ish) reason for supporting them too, honest! Any other football fans about?

My favourite all-time player:

I'm another brit fan. I waive the flag for the Denver Broncos (had a girlfriend from Boulder, Co). To my eternal shame I spent John Elway's first season at Mile High shaking my head and predicting bad things. So what do I know?

Steve Young? As a die hard 49ers fan, I would place Joe Montana waaaay ahead of Steve Young in my books. Not to impune what Steve Young could do, but just to say that Joe could do it better.

Indeed, Joe Montana is probably the most famous Niners player ever (along with Jerry Rice, of course) but I only started watching the sport when I was fifteen, which was, if memory serves, Joe's last year with the Niners before he went to the Chiefs, so I have extremely limited experience in watching him play. Steve Young played a large part in keeping the Niners going after such a legend departed. Besides, he was pretty much the first QB I saw there, and don't forget - I said my favourite, not the best. Also, he remains the Niners last top-quality QB - a position that is in dire need of such a player right now, I think you'll agree?

Agreed and good point.

First off, DLH homey, give Steve Young a little more credit. When it comes to concussions, he is second to none on the 9ers.

Secondly, the 9ers have a pretty good QB...they're just coddling him right now instead of letting him play through pain. Eventually he's going to need to do that, so make it now. Alex Smith can play. Of Quarterbacks currently in the league today, he projects to being the 5th most cerebral signal caller, behind Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Eli Manning and Ryan Fitzpatrick (dude aced the Wonderlic [IQ] test...which is designed for these guys not even to finish it).

What the 9ers are in dire need of is speed to surround Mr. Smith with. Lloyd is good and all, but they need much more talent around him.

Allow me to point out Steve Young's virtues:

He is the game’s top rated passer of all-time. He is one of just two quarterbacks in NFL history to lead the league in passing six times, and he’s the only one to do so four straight seasons. He threw more touchdown passes to the great Jerry Rice than any other quarterback. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player twice and earned MVP honors in a Super Bowl.

His name is Steve Young, who in 2005 joins the elite of the elite with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"Obviously, Steve Young was one of the great quarterbacks to ever play the game,” stated his former coach George Seifert. “In fact, he may have been the greatest running and passing combination to play the position in the history of the NFL."

Steve might have received a fair few concussions but they didn't make him miss too many games, did they? You can't really be saying that Alex Smith is as good as Steve? I haven't really seen him play that much (the Niners don't get shown on TV over here much, not even when they regularly had a winning record) so I can't really comment on him personally but I haven't read very good reports on him. I hope he does turn out okay though! You're certainly right about the other positions though! The Niners could really use a top RB in the same vein as Ladainian Tomlinson.

For the record, I never said Steve Young wasn't very good. He had a great career.

That being said, I would like to point out that if he was playing for most any other team, his career wouldn't have been that much. Right guy for the right situation and the right time.

As for Alex Smith:

First, he's only 21, which is extremely young for a rookie QB. He's not fully developed.

But he can most definitely play. He's a gamer, he makes plays. His arm isn't that strong, but hes very accurate and has a great sense of where to put the ball. He has good timing. He is a real solid athlete with good wheels for a QB.

In all honesty, only one thing has scared me about Alex Smith -- he has a slow release when throwing the football. But he can probably fix that with a good QB coach.

He probably won't be better than Young and Montana, but if you get some athletes around him, he'll be a consistent pro-bowler.

Okay, my apologies for getting a bit carried away! You're probably right with your above point. I really do hope that Alex Smith (and indeed the team in general) manage to turn things around. A whole coaching change may be a little extreme but I suspect it's only round the corner, what with a 2-9 record and all. Still, at least they've got the Cardinal's next. Anyone remember what the Niners did to them last season?

They just hired a new staff, one that is doing a great job despite the record. They are playing hard, which is the mark of a well coached team. They only have a couple real good players, so you can't expect wins.

And yes, they beat the Cardinals twice last year, 31-28 in OT both games. I was at the game in Arizona.

If I were you, I'd be rooting for losses. If they lose out, they should get the first pick in the draft, which probably will be Reggie Bush from USC. Most analysts agree that there aren't 10 players regardless of position in the NFL that are better than Reggie Bush right now...and he's just a kid in college still.
