Saw this last night, was always interested, rarely thrilled.
I thought it struggled to find it's identity between a human drama about a guy trying to come to terms with his situation and a Dawn of the Dead rip off.

I really wish it'd been aimed more towards the human drama side, the section where he loses Sam and then breaks down trying to get a reaction from the shop dummy was heartbreaking.
As was the finale, the desperation of trying to tell the Darkseekers they've been saved when they're beyond any salvation was amazingly powerful, and Smith was the ideal choice for this as he has a really likable and human element to him.

Overall though I felt really underwhelmed, maybe being a fan of the original material I shouldn't have had such high expectations of Hollywood!

I'm glad it won't be a high profile franchise though, sequels would be pointless, I was half expecting the Hollywood happy ending to show it's head!

I'd advise anyone who's seen it to go and read it, you'll be impressed, and see how mishandled the film was in a lot of ways.

You know I read the orignal Novella by Robert Matheson a couple of days before watching the movie, and I was surprised by how much I liked the movie.

I did kinda enjoy the film, it could of been way worse. The way Hollywood's butchered Van Helsing, Hellboy, Ghost Rider, well it could of been way worse!

I just felt in someone else's hands it could've been amazing, a supernatural film with a human element to rival something like Magnolia.

Ironically, seeing as I hated Hellboy, I'd have loved to see what Guillermo del Toro wouldn've done with it. If you've seen his native films he's second to none at putting human drama into fantasy realms.
Both Pans' Labyrinth and The Devils' Backbone are excellent films and, going off topic, I'd recommend them to any fans of world cinema.

I never read the book, but from what I've heard, the book waay outshines the movie, and the movie barely resembles the book at all.

The movie sucks, btw.

Ghost Rider was one that particularly disappointed me, because it's such a good story, but the movie screwed it all around and was horrible....

Actually; "Dawn of the Dead"; is a Rip-Off of "I am Legend".

The book "I am Legend" was written in 1954; and it was made into a movie in 1964, called, "The Last Man on Earth".

It was made into a movie a second time in 1971, called
"The Omega Man".

"Dawn of the Dead" came out in 1978.

And we could go further back and say the novel itself is just a masterful modern retelling of H.G. Wells' "The Country of the Blind," where abilities that seem perfectly natural to us can grant enormous power, but also evoke fear and hatred in a world without them.

I actually thought the movie wasn't too bad - the time went fast, anyway.

I don't think either of those previous films actually took the source material of I Am Legend did they despite having similarities.

And Dawn of the Dead is much more a straight Zombie survival film, which I felt they went with a bit too much with Legend. I am legend is as much about a mans struggle to cope without human interaction, or that's how I percieve it at least.

And the CGI was shocking huh, why did they use CGI to create what are basically mutated humans?? At no point did the Darkseekers look at all real

What did you all think of the ending? I seem to be the only one who's read the novel that thinks, although it's different, it's actually quite a good ending.

I do know the book ending, and while there is certainly more emotional complexity in the book, I agree it was a decent enough ending in the movie.

That said, I need to rant for a moment: After establishing a deeply human movie, with human-made hopes shattered by human-made scientific errors, featuring a human who tries so desperately to "resurrect" fallen humans so he won't be the last human on the planet...two more people show up from off a Brazilian hospital ship because God told them to go to Vermont?! What the hell is that all about? Why didn't some deity whisper in the ear of the original scientist "Psst, don't use the measles virus." The whole spiritual thing didn't ring true to the rest of the story, in my humble opinion.

There, I feel much better
