It has the feel and look of the 80s, but with a ton of 70s movie style. And it was fantastic. There were so many great scenes and shots. The whole opening was so good. The zoom into the lock that was an actual real zoom into a real lock was cool as fuck. I had never even heard of this until recently when people were talking about how this movie Thief did Drive much better back in 1981.
And I loved this. It was pretty much perfect. Even Jim Belushi was good in it. Everyone was good. Jimmy Caan is a guy I've never figured out. How his career never really took off the way it seemed like it would. He obviously wasn't Pacino's level of actor, but he was for sure leading man/action star material after The Godfather. But he's just as good here as he was as Sonny, probably better. Tuesday Weld was such a beautiful woman. I usually don't even care for the petite blond type, but she was radiant. I'm smitten with that grandma now. Has she kept it together at all?
And that was Michael Mann's debut film? Holy shit. Has anyone made that good and polished of a film in their first attempt? That was top, top level directing, cinematography, interesting editing. This is a great movie and you should see it if you haven't. It's on Netflix. The end with Caan being a god damn man and tying up the lose ends with the best possible Pink Floyd knock off playing over it was excellent.
Great review, made my mouth water. Queuing it up on Netflix now!
