Seriously though I hate when beautiful women smoke. It kills me. If they only knew what it's doing to them.
I finally quit smoking on June 15. I wasted 7 years of my life doing something that had no benefit whatsoever to me. I finally wised up and realized not only is it a tremendous waste of money but the health problems associated with it aren't worth it. My Uncle who has emphysema lives with us. Seeing and listening to him hack up all kinds of nasty shit all day long was enough to make me quit. Here it is more than 2 months later since I quit and I feel great. I don't have to worry about bad breath, yellow teeth, smelly clothes, smelly hair, lighters and/or lighter fluid, matches, etc. I don't wake up coughing in the middle of the night. My sense of smell and taste have improved dramatically.
I have SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder) and moderate depression and I still forced myself to quit. I was on Wellbutrin for depression. It's also a stop smoking aid but I was still smoking for a good while after my prescription ran out. I ultimately did it cold turkey through sheer willpower. If I can quit anyone can.
My advice to the lovely Anne and all smokers here on SP: Quit, by any means necessary. It's not impossible. Think of all the money you'll save. You can thank me later when you feel better.
My dad smoked quite a bit back when he was young...in about 1970 he was 37 years old and the doctors told him to stop smoking or he would be dead in less than a year. So he decided he wanted to live and quit smoking, "cold turkey".
As I said this was 1970 and with the money he saved from
not smoking he bought a dishwasher and a microwave oven and
other things. He is still alive and well today; at 77 years old.
Smoking can't be that wonderful of a thing that it is worth
killing yourself for.....is it?
However; if you want to smoke...you have that right.

*sigh* I used to get real bent out of shape over otherwise beautiful women who smoke. In recent years, I've come to the conclusion that, since they're gonna do it anyway, it's fine as long as I don't have to see it or (more importantly) inhale it secondhand.

Nice story Doc. Glad to hear a happy ending. There's nothing wonderful about smoking. Not a damn thing. People don't smoke because it's wonderful. People smoke because they're addicted. It's an addiction and like any other addiction it can be beaten. All it takes is a little willpower. The mind is a powerful tool.
Yes they have the right but that doesn't make it right. Why would anyone want to pay to slowly kill themselves? Doesn't sound so smart does it? Not only that but smoking is becoming less and less socially acceptable (at least here in the US anyway). Just look at this list if you don't believe me.
There are two types of smokers -- those who will never quit and will continue to smoke 2 packs a day until they're 6 feet under (like my Uncle) and those who quit before it's too late.
